Why no vent for the stove fan?

After getting our 276-sr we were supprised[over looked] that there was no exterior vent for the stove fan.Is this common on sunlines? We really miss being able to remove the heat produced from cooking to out side of the trailer.Do you all think I could install one myself thru the trailer wall and metal fan mounting back plate?I would order the rv style replacement vent, fab in some duct work and seal everything up to keep water out and air flow at a max?

yep it's common on the newer sunlines along with many other manufacterers,I also miss the vent to the outside but for the small amount of cooking we do inside it would not be worth installing a vented hood, keep us posted if you decide to do the vent mod.

Chriseck,

We recently bought a 289SR and as we hardly ever cook inside I never even missed that vent. I had to look at pictures of ours (it went from the dealers lot to storage) to see that it was missing. I had a TurboMaxx fan installed on the L/R vent which will probably exhaust fumes and heat quite well. Maybe that could be an alternative for you.

Sometime back a poster on the RV.Net site said that he was told by someone at Sunline that the hood vents were eliminated because of water leaks. Whether or not this is fact I don't know, but that seems to be a poor reason.

I too had to look outside at mine and was surprised that there was none.

In our old Trail-Lite, we'd set the smoke alarm off even with a vented hood so I'm not sure of the advantages of having one.

I might add that when I cook it's even possible for me to burn water :P

Lilke the rest of you, when we took delivery of our new Sunline in Oct. 04, I immediately noticed the lack of an outside vent for the stove hood and the dealer called Sunline who confirmed that they no longer were installing the exterior vents. That was OK with me. Subsequently, I replaced the original vent in the bathroom with a Fantastic Vent Fan which we use to pull various odors out of the RV as required and works exceptionally well. Also, reversing the fan flow pulls in cool air from the outside. I see the lack of a hood fan not affecting our extreme liking of this trailer since it is by far the best trailer that we have ever had, with the exception of the 1999 Sunline T-1950 that we traded in on this one. Sunline products are TOPS

Thanks for the replys.I found replacement outside vents in PPLs catlog for about $10.00,but it would require a pretty good size hole in order to mount in the outside wall. Will have to mull this over some more. This is something I know I can install. We will try some more cooking to see where we stand.I see your point with setting off the alarm.

While we were doing the factory tour, I asked Carl Kern, the lead designer at Sunline why the vent didnt exhaust outside and he said they were fixing too many due to leakage and problems with them, so they changed the design to exhaust inside.

Carl was a true camper himself and bragged about the 165 days of camping in his own 2499 with his 2 kids, wife, dog and a cat!

Like the rest of us, he said for the few times that he actually cooked inside the TT, it wasnt that big of a deal.

You are correct, Carl said his next trailer would be a 2499 after he sold his current one. He wanted to try and build a 2499 from the ground up with all Solar and be completely self sufficient.

We took the tour in September and then hit the RV Show in Hershey. I'll tell you that after taking the tour, I sure am glad we bought a Sunline. The gallery of the factory tour are my pictures. The picture in the photo gallery of the Blue F-250 and all white 2499 is ours. We're from Milford MI. not Milford OH. though

Folks.....

Allow me to add a little confusion to the discussion. Our Que SE does have an over-stove exhaust fan - factory installed -and it exhausts vertically thru its own roof vent.

We installed a fantastic fan in the front centerline vent. We also will do little cooking inside (the George Foreman excluded).

A word of warning: we were told by SUNLINE that they could NOT install the reversable FANTASTIC fan in the Main cabin vent (located just outside of the bathroom door) of our T-276-SR because of the close proximity of the black tank vent pipe and the possibility of pulling odors INTO the trailer. I would think that would also apply to the bathroom vent!!. BTW, we have the vent only model and love the fan, the ability to set a temp on the thermostat, and have the fan come on and off to control the inside temp is great when it's moderate temps. It also has a rain sensor that shuts it off and closes the hatch when it detects rain.

Mack

Your caution is very true if you use the fan in draw in (suck into) the camper mode.

However I did add a TurboMax in the center bath and only use it in exhaust mode. Basically is draws air from other parts of the camper and exhausts out the bath vent. Just like the original Sunline little whizzer fan, but a ton more volume and a lot less noise. This exhaust only combination works OK.

If you want to use it to drawn air into the camper, Mack is right. Sewer gas comes in with it sometimes.

I had a stove vent to the outside of my last camper and never used it because it was too noisy! Cook stinky things outside on a hot plate, steam in the microwave and open roof vent for other cooking.
