Update on mdfiregal
IF you saw my post in the "Winters Coming...." you know my wife Carol aka mdfiregal fell from our Sunnie last Saturday and dislocated/broke her ankle. She had three fractures along with a severe dislocation (I've since seen the x-rays, they were impressive).
Kudos, to the Franklin Memorial ER staff in Charlestown, WV who treated us like royalty last Saturday. They reduced her dislocation and got us home. The ER doc even followed up with a phone call yesterday afternoon, not staff, the doc!!
Yesterday evening she underwent surgery to repair a fractured fibia (smaller bone of the lower leg), a torn connection between the tibia (larger lower leg bone) and fibia, and a fracture of the ball of the tibia. This required the installation of two plates and multiple screws.
We had a total disaster with the surgery at our local hospital, surgery went well, but the treatment pre and post op was less than stellar and is something for the lawyers to straighten out. Among other things, they sent her home with her IV still in place. Having a retired Paramedic for a husband comes in handy at times.
She is home, but is VERY uncomfortable. Six weeks in a cast with no weight bearing, then rehab. Four months out two of the screws will have to be removed.
Also, Thanks to Gary and Kitty for the offer to come to us on Sunday and help me pack up. My brother in law was with us so we didn't have to take them up, but SOC members are the best!!!

I'm sorry to hear that things did not go as well as they should have.....hope the pain lessens some and she becomes comfortable soon.
Hey being a paramedic...you should be able to get her some good "stuff"....LOL - being an AEMT - I know you can't but it was worth a laugh!
Wishing her a very speedy recovery.....

She's resting much more comfortably tonight, finally realized she's tough, but really did need the Tramadol.
When I say tough, I mean she found her foot in a position that would caused most normal people to faint and she just put it back in an anatomically correct position!!!!!!

I sure hope things stat getting better soon!
We just got back from camping at Shenandoah River state park and had a great time! Kitty really impressed me, with how much she was able to do yesterday.. Maybe we should start a Sunline rehab office!

Well Mack you have our sympathies. I fell from our 2499 on April 3 2010. I broke the Calcaneus bone. They called it a saver comminuted fracture. They said no weight for 3 months then I landed on it 6 weeks in set me back a bit. I am still getting back in shape. At the time I said I just want to walk at Henderson beach state park in FL. 1 more time. We went April this year! I know from what I read you have a lot more to deal with but with your back ground you are off to a good start. We wish you all the best. One thing that is really helping me is my DW gives it a massage at least once a day. That happens usually after I massage her left leg which she fell on in July!
All the best and a speedy recovery
Ted

She's doing much better now that she's taking the stronger meds and getting some rest. However, she is getting down mentally over the length of recovery. We went to our family doctor today and when she saw that her disability insurance papers have her off work through the end of the year, the reality of six weeks started to sink in. Now that the realization of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are all going to involve crutches it's tough.
Yeah Gary, after three knee surgeries myself, I'm definitely a member of the rehab crew!!!!!

We're having a really bad night tonight.
She went back to surgeon today and they put her in a hard cast after removing the stitches. She has a plate and ten screws on her fibia, and three screws and a plate on her tibia. In order to get the cast on her ankle, it had to be at 90 degrees, it was about at 110 degrees. Needless to say, the manipulation required has her hurting.
She just took 1000 mg of tylenol and 100 mg of Tramadol unfortunately to very little effect.
It's going to be a long night!!!!

Sorry to hear MDFiregirl is having to go thru so much pain. Hopefully soon some of the pain will subside and she will feel a little better. It's horrible to be in so much pain and unable to get any relief. Thank goodness she has you to take care of her.

Things are calming down a little. Still having severe pain three or four times a day. We're working through those.
Thanks for all your support and prayers!

Cast came off Tuesday morning!! I found it hard to believe that they told her to "bear as much weight as you can", straight from a "no weight bearing" cast. Literally put a sock & tennis shoe on, hopped off the exam table, and started walking on it with the aid of crutches!!!! She's sore, probably doing too much with it, but she's now into four a week PT sessions until the first of the year, then will be hitting three a week in the new year.
They're saying as much as 18-24 months for recovery. ;o(
Mack
P.S. She says she wants to get this tattoed on her ankle!!!

Glad to hear she's back on her feet. I bet quite a bit of the soreness is simply from using it again after so long of not using it...

Yeah, Jon....it can't help but hurt if you go from no weight and encased in fiberglass from your toes to just below your knee, to walking on it with little support!!
