Ft Desoto is an excellent campground.
With the exception of the Pull-Through sites, all sites have good seperation from each other including some trees. The only hook ups are Power and Water. There is a dump station at the front of the park. Pets are allowed in one large section with a max of 2 per site. There is a dog park and dog beach down the road from the camp area.
There are a number of sites that are non-reservable for weekends and are handed out to first come campers early friday morning. They used to let people line up at the office before the gate opened on fridays but they stopped that. This means that it can be a bit stressfull hoping you get a site if you have no reservation since getting there super early doesn't help.
The trees can pose a problem for tall 5th wheels however when backing in to a standard lot. The roads in the campsite are dirt with shells instead of gravel and are often pitted with large holes.
There is a small camp store but they were building a much larger one last time we were there (Summ er 2010). It is a pretty long and slow drive back to St Petersburg so make sure you have what you need. The bathrooms have a washer and drier at each and 4 showers per side (Male / Female).
It is a beautifull park and the beach won best beach in America twice. Reservations are best made way in advance. You can watch the dolphins come in to the cove in the evening. During the summer, you can also expect a regular rain storm during the late afternoon hours.
