Replacement microwave need to be for RV?
Can I just go down to wally world and buy to fit the hole or does it have to be a microwave designed for RV use?
If so, what makes an RV microwave special?
Thanks.

I have read/heard that the RV microwaves have vibration hardend componets to help with bouncing down the road. However I have not seen one apart to know if this is fact or sales pitch.
You do need to watch on a Wally World one where the heat vents out of. I "think" our Dometic vents out the front top as opposed to the top rear or center as on some home ones that sit on the counter. Buying one that tighlty fits the hole and has no room to vent could be a problem on long microwave times.
Hope this helps
John

I too have heard that John.
Besides that, I think a normal microwave would work, as long as you can remove the frame piece off the old one and mount it to the new one. The frame allows it to attach into the cabinet as well as trim it out to look nice.

The mounting frame also holds the unit away from the inside walls of the mounting cabinet. The slots also allow cool air in the bottom and warm air out the top...

H'mm forgot that. Good point. The RV microwave is about the only thing I never had to do anything with but use. So I never had a need to ever take one out of the hole or fix. I can't say the same from the rest of the camper/campers.....
See all you/"we all" learned from you taking the T299 apart

I recall reading an article based on how it's specially designed to cope with the bounces but still haven't seen one yet. Must be good with some sophisticated features but I feel there is no problem with the ones we are using at present, no problem at all so far.

Folks....
With most earlier trailers, we used a regular $90, 1 cubic foot microwave braced into place in a cabinet, with room around its cabinet mount for ventilation, and during travel, the turntable braced with a chunk of foam. The Que had a built-in unit, but we did use foam to secure the turntable during travel. I'm now back to a $70 Emerson 1 cubic foot braced inside a cabinet, with a cut-down "noodle" to hold the turntable during travel.
I've noted only 3 noticable performance-related differences between the Dometic built-in vs. all the other cheapo models:
===>The dometic was a bit higher in power (faster results), and mounted conveniently high above the stove, whereas the others tended to be in cabinets below the countertop, and..
===>There is a minor annoyance involved with leaving the cabinet door open while using the microwave with the "cheapo-in-cabinet" approach.
In over 60,000 miles of towing, I've never had any of the microwaves go bad.
For the difference in costs, I'll stay with the cheapo models if they don't already come included with the RV.
Frank

Before I was able to purchase a Sunline new enough to have a built in MV, I had this wonderful little 16' Sunline. It was towed every where, even on the beach on the coast of Oregon. I had a cheapie MV mounted on top of the fridge, and never had a problem with it. I also think I transferred it to one or two more Sunlines before I finally just let it go in one when I sold it. Never had a problem with it, it rode on top of that cabinet for several years and many, many miles.

Well, I got a $69 Magic Chef down at Lowes. It fits the hole perfectly and is the exact same shade of black. (Yes, according to my wife, black comes in different colors!).
Anyway, I've attached the mounting vents to it and added a thin rubber pad underneath. The MW location is forward of the axles, so I don't expect a lot bouncing.
We'll see.

Actually your wife is correct, there ARE different shades of black.
Glad you got a MV, and it should be fine.

Your welcome John. Granted a factory built in looks nice, but yikes the price. A store purchased MW is much cheaper and can be "installed" in a cabinet with venting IMHO. And John, we KNOW what you are capable of

WOW, I think this supports Frank's (Nasa24a) point on affording the cheapo's.... 28 bucks... and I'm sure they are still making money or at least breaking even.
Some of these large stores have been known to loose money on high end or high use products to draw people into the store but I do not think a micro wave is a product to declare being a lost leader on.
Your right Norm, unbelievable.

Well, we've been using the Magic Chef for two months now.
The power isn't as strong as the Domectic so we have to cook things an extra 10 to 20 seconds. It's SO frustrating having to wait that much longer!
And the glass turntable plate occasionally bounces off the track.
Otherwise, works like a charm.
