The original MW in our 2670 1996 Sunline pooped-out last trip. I presumed it was some sort of high-end RV microwave but I removed the screws that held it in place and it ended up being an off-the-shelf Magic Chef. The vented black bezel that went around the MW has four light metal straps that scewed onto the MW's case in the back to hold it in place. I located two microwaves that I believe will fit. One is 19" wide at Meijer's ($69) and the other is 18.5" wide at WalMart ($55). The original was 19.25" wide, but had only a .9 c.f. inside dimension. The two I found are both .9 c.f. too. I think it just represents improvements in that many years. I'm not sure if I should keep looking or maybe use some sort of foam filler strip to make up for the difference in trim. I do not want this to be more than a $10 fix.

If so, what makes an RV microwave special?

Thanks.
The price. The same goes for a LCD RV TV. Remember this stuff came from China and no one was real careful along the way if it survived that it should last years in an RV.

When we had to replace ours in one TT, I was able to match the size exactly at Home Depot. Everything matched right up including the screw holes for securing. Janalee

some use a diverter / vent to direct hot air toward the vented "trim ring"
as long as a unit won't recirculate the hot air , any unit will work. the regulars are designed to be on a counter top, free air flow!!

Hi,

What is the context of your question? Assuming it is will a normal store microwave work in the camper? and then is there a difference between a counter type or an over the range type?

Several folks have replaced their Dometic RV microwave with a home type. The price difference is dramatic which is one reason. I myself have not heard of a difference with a home type being any better for a counter top one verses the range top.

One of the issues in using the home one it it should be mounted in a way it will not bounce out of the cabinet going down a bumpy road. Create a method to secure it.

I did find these if you are looking for a possible RV microwave. Check the fit for sure before buying. They may or may not fit your cabinet without doing some modifications. But they have a mounting kit. And check where the air vents out from the old microwave and the new one so the new one can exhaust the air/heat well enough.

I'm not sure if the actual models of microwaves used in the Sunlines are still available. They may be replaced with newer models.

Hope this helps

John

Hi John, thank you for responding. After reading the comments here, I'm gathering that they are saying you can install a countertop model where the old overhead unit was. I am wondering if that's safe given the vents are in the rear and not on the front with countertop models.
