That sounds like a classic sign of low amperage. You had enough to get it to try to start, but not enough to run it well. Hopefully you shut it off pretty quick, because leaving it like that could do damage.

If you have a dedicated 20amp circuit, then the air should run on low ok if it's the only thing running. That means, no microwave, no refrigerator, no lights, etc. But they're ideally designed for 30 amp usage so the other stuff can run. This is why when a unit is big enough for two A/C units, they upgrade to 50 amp service so the second A/C can use the extra 20 amps.

Jon - I think you are onto something....I seem to remember not being able to run the A/C on the 1950 before we had a dedicated 30amp line put in! If in fact Joan is plugged into to a plug from the house or garage most likely it is not a dedicated line....could have ....say a frig in the house on the same line.......just thinking out load!!!!

Ahhhhh

Yes I have it plugged into my garage and there are 3 plugs total in my garage and they are not dedicated or 30amp So would that cause the AC to just have a low hum when turned on?

And no I didn't leave it on, I managed to do one thing right! (Yeah me!)

I just turned it on and off a couple of times....so I guess the only way to know for sure is when I take her in to get de-winterized and checked over?

Wow having to have a dedicated plug for the AC pretty much blows apart the plan to plug in at my friend's in Texas for awhile...unless I buy a generator.

Hopefully the mystery is solved...Now I continue my battle to get the mothball odor out (Never Again!)

Man against mothball odor and so far mothball odor is winning!

Actually it is much better than it was.
  • Leaving all windows open, fans inside, running the exhaust fans for a while each day.
  • Put baking soda on carpet and jack knife couch and vacuumed.
  • Washed the whole interior with a combo of Dawn/Baking soda and apple cider vinegar and
  • Have boxes of charcoal and small dishes of vinegar in her.
  • Today I will switch the vinegar to with those odor absorbing gels. I have a call in to the Fire and Restoration biz to see if they can suggest another cleaner
  • But I think the biggest thing is that is just takes time.

If anyone else knows of a good mothball odor fighter do tell!

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

I am getting the hum from the unit, and the fan doesn't turn on. So I am guessing my motor is froze up like this thread says. I haven't had time to find out for sure yet. Your AC unit should be completely seperate from the thermostat.
