Another thing you could do is measure your actual lens frame, where the lens clips in. You can go to automotive or auto suppliers and get an aftermarket light, opaque or amber and remove the plastic lens from that light and rework it into your frame. Buy a cheap light initially so if you booboo it won't be an expensive proposition.
My porch light tends to be right under one of the frame rails for the awning, so when I close up the awning there is next to no clearance. If yours is the same that may have been what caused your problem. So be careful when building a new lens that the lens sits flat or shallow to clear the awning rail.
Also, I found the inside light bulb fixture was sort of rotting, so this year I removed the original light bulb fixture and replaced everything with an LED light. and used epoxy to fasten it. Many mile of travel this summer and all is fine.
