1981 NEWBIE...Model, Trim, & Brakes NEEDED

Hello, My name is Michelle. Thank you for this club! We are restoring a 1981 Sunline trying to identify the Model and some parts. Does anyone know how to figure the model, and where and what roof trim and brakes to purchase? A parts list or diagrams would be really helpful! So far I found the manual and brochure in the files. Thank you for those!!!

Hi Realzeal,

Welcome! and congrats on your Sunny!

As to how to back into a model, since you found the brochure for your 81 camper, look through brochure and match the floor plan to the model numbers. If you cannot sort it out, post pictures of all 4 outside views
(walls) of the camper and we can help back into the model. Ideally the original colors and decals are semi intact but if it is painted over, we can still help.

The model number will not help you much trying to find parts at local RV dealers or online sales places. If you tell someone you have an 81 Sunline camper model XYZ, that info will not gain you much help. And a parts diagram with part numbers next to it, does not exist on the entire camper. Some appliances have these, but not the camper in general. This is often true on most any camper, even brand new. They are not mass produced enough to justify the cost of creating the drawing on every camper, every part, ever year, as they keep changing.

But, we can help as most all items on the camper can be replaced, sometimes you may have to upgrade to a newer style, but RV parts are still very available as Sunline did not make every part on the camper. They engineered a trailer frame, floor plan, how to build the camper, sell and service it. They bought RV manufactured parts and installed them onto the camper. Things like cabinet doors, most anything wood they built from scratch from wood materials. But siding, moldings, windows, blind parts, water pumps, piping, appliances etc. they bought and installed. A lot of the same parts are used across the RV industry on other brands.

There is also RV lingo, what do they call stuff... this is a learning as to what the stuff is called is key to finding RV parts.

You asked for roof trim, in this case of a 1981 camper, it really helps to post pictures of what you need help with. The term trim means a lot of different things and the older 80's metal roof campers are built very different then the mid 90's and newer rubber roof campers. The roof moldings and trim are different. And we nor you may know if a prior owner changed something along the way.

There are 3 ways to add pics.

1. Upload pics to a specific post attaching them at the end of the post.

2. Linking them in from a public viewable web photo hosting service you have.

See here for 1 and 2 https://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f...html#post86041

3. You can upload pics to the forum in your own personal photo album. Then link them to anywhere in the text of a post. See here on how to create an album. https://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f...html#post87945

If you still get stuck, let us know. Pic's go a long way in helping show things you are working on, and we really like seeing Sunline pics!

Take some pics of what you need help finding on the roof or anywhere on the camper and we can help point you where to find something that may work.

On brake parts, this is yet another topic that needs pics. The early 80's campers had a few different axles in them and some of the manufactures have gone out of business, but not all of them. And some times, the brakes can be clean up and get them working again. This all comes down to what they look like and what shape they are in. Worst case, some members ordered a new brake axle as they loved the camper to much and getting a whole new single axle was not that much cost compared to a different camper.

Hope this helps

John

Where can I order a new axle. I’m in Ontario Canada. My brakes need total replacement and apparently I will need a whole new axle and wheel assembly.

Online Trailer Parts | Axle Manufacturer | Cerka Canada is a reliable Canadian supplier located in Milton, ON. My local RV dealer orders parts from them at the same price on Cerka's website.

JohnB is the technical guy and the first thing he's going to want to know is year and model of trailer so he can advise you on which parts you need.
