Awning - torn
Hi all,
The wind got a hold of our awning today and ripped it for a foot right at the roller. I will need to replace it and would like some feed back for those that have done this....best fabric & make, where to buy, etc.
Thanks

If the hardware isn't bent, you can get just the fabric and replace it. You can also get pieces of the hardware to fix what is damaged.
Fabric replacement is something you could handle yourself, but the spring will need to be wound again and that isn't something easy to yourself. It needs many turns and can hurt you, so it is best to leave that to the professionals.
Any good RV dealer and some Camping World locations can handle this. You will probably need to take it in for them to inspect and decide and then they'll order the parts. Then you'll need to take it back in for the installation.
If you need to do a full replacement, you have basically two choices for brands: A&E or Carefree. I personally am a fan of Carefree because they are much more user friendly. They have built in clamps and an system to release the awning without needing the pull rod.
It might cost a little more, but you get what you pay for.
Jon

Thanks Jon...fortunately the only damage is the 1 ft tear in the awning. I was assuming that I could pull the mechanism partly out, secure it, slide the damaged awning off then slide the new one in. Sounds too easy! Or is it?

I think you'll find it more difficult than you think. The awning has two springs, one on each end, so you'll have to release one of them to get the old fabric out and/or get the new installed.

Yeah...thought about it after I pulled the trigger on my post...a knuckle buster waiting to happen, LOL. I think I will take it to the shop that did my floor repair and let them do it right. Thanks again, Jon.

My dad had a black fingernail for a couple months after the screwdriver snapped back at him when we were tightening one of the springs on one of my past coaches...
