sewing the awning

I spent all day today washing the roof and the awning of my camper, and when I washed the inside of the awning I noticed the seam where it attaches to the camper was seperated in one spot. I want to sew that spot so it doesnt spread any further. Doses anyone have any advice on the type of thread I should use? I was thinking maybe fishing line? Also while Im asking, my roof came pretty clean and is still pretty white, do i need to reseal it or just treat it. Also there are some waves in the roof toward the front of the camper, there arent any leaks but had a little concern of water laying in those spots. Does anybody have these waves in their roof also? Ill take some pics of the roof and post them later so you can see what Im talking about.
Thanks Joe
