Grill Mounting Bracket Location; T-2475

Hi Everybody!

First time post, we are looking for help and greatly appreciate all the excellent info we have found on this site...! We recently purchased a very nice 2003 Sunline Solaris T-2475 and would like to install a grill mounting bracket. The Sunline Manual provides the following info on a diagram (attached): left edge of bracket should be 33" to the right of the door entrance and 18.5" to center from the bottom of the trailer. Problem: that puts us under the awning and my understanding from forums etc is we shouldn't do this for a number of reasons. The TT has a low-pressure propane line at 57" to the right of the door and this line is just outside the awning. Ideally, I would like to install the mounting bracket 66" to the right of the door (in line with the right edge of the front side window), and to center it 20.25" from the bottom of the trailer.
QUESTION:
Any suggestions on how I could find out if I will be screwing into anything solid (or anything dangerous...) using my proposed dimensions rather than those suggested by the manufacturer? After much soul-searching, our preference would be to mount the BBQ for ease and convenience but would appreciate any/all feedback on the subject.

Thanks all,

Gary & Johanne

Hi Gary & Johann... Welcome to the club!

Our fifth wheel has the low pressure propane fitting also. Another of our members "Trailblazer" (Also from Canada) has the same model fifth wheel, that we have. His solution was to use a low pressure propane hose and use a Weber grill on the picnic table. That way, he's not cooking under the awning. Unfortunately, when he was grilling on Friday, it started pouring down rain!

My unit has the bar mounted under the bedroom window and under the awning. Naaaa. I like the idea of a hose and movable BBQ. I'd rather not have to keep a supply of those little HP bottles around. I assume you can use quick connects.

Thanks to both of you for your quick replies. We agree fully with not wanting the BBQ under the awning. Once you witness my BBQ cooking skills, you'll understand why... With the addition of a quick connect to the low pressure line, hooking up outside the awning is the way we want to go. My concern with our RVQ BBQ (new to us) is it seems top heavy and with no foot pedestal and the cover open, a good gust of wind could send my catch of the day flying...

It is for this reason that I would like to install the mounting bracket on the TT (away from the awning and away from any windows). With the BBQ placed in the mounting support, the unit is very stable and even with the heavy cover open, there is still at least 6" between the cover and the side of the TT so heat and/or spatter from the BBQ shouldn't be an issue... I hope...?
That leaves me with the dilemna of finding wall studs that will support the weight of the BBQ and the wall-mounted support. Our plan "B" is to use a folding metal table that we will bring with us if I am unable to find a sturdy location to install the BBQ mounting bracket.
Question: is there a rule of thumb on measurements I could use to help figure out where the wall studs are on our T-2475?

Thanks again and all comments/suggestions most welcome...!

Not sure myself but I assume there's a 16" spacing. You should be able to tap around either from the inside or through the siding to find a stud.

Good luck

I like this grille mount on the trailer tongue done by mclamp....

Nice, steady and out of the way with a short line to the gas supply.

HI Jim,

Nic pic! thanks for posting it... My uncle had suggested something similar and about the only negative I could find was the need to disconnect and reconnect the gas lines. NO, not all Canadians are as lazy as I am...

I may need to go the route of not attaching the BBQ to the TT as we really don't want to mount at the factory-provided location due to the long length of our awning; would put the BBQ under it. To EMD Driver's point, this would mean getting wet on a rainy day though (and we've had plenty of those lately in the Eastern Townships of Quebec...) but this is probably the lesser of the two evils.

Paul:
I downloaded some neat stud location spec sheet PDF's for the 1950 from the Files tab on this site (that someone was kind enough to upload) hoping to see a pattern on stud spacing, but there doesn't appear to be one. My mounting bracket is only 15 3/4" long with 6" hole centers so I may be out of luck on mounting it... I will try poking around to see if I can locate the vertical studs but I would need to find a horizontal stud to mount my bracket. As an fyi, if anybody tries opening one of these PDF's using Adobe Reader 8, can't read the measurements and gets a message saying "Cannot find or create the font "CenturyGothic"...", consider downloading another PDF viewer. I just had this happen to me and I downloaded PDF XChange (also a freebie), which works well.

If I have any success in locating a mounting location, I'll document my find.

Thanks all,

Gary

UPDATE: Just came in after doing a quick once-over with a stud-sensor that Johanne picked up for me. One neat little gadget...! I've gotta run on a few errands but while gone, would anybody know why I would be picking up an electrical wire signal on the door entrance side of the TT just ahead of the front bedroom window? As far as I know, there is nothing electrical in that area, neither inside nor out. When I get back, I'll re-read the instructions... as there are several sensitivity settings on the unit. I pick up the vertical studs where I would expect to find them, ie either side of the window etc. and I am also picking up something horizontal right about where I would want to screw in the BBQ mounting bracket... would hate for it to be a 12V line however that would somehow short out the convertor if I screwed into it...

Later...!

I don't want to get "off topic" but what model stud sensor did you get? I saw one at Lowes that senses wires and was thinking about getting one to replace my current basic one.

Gary,

Sunline put 12v wires all over the trailer. I wish I could find the pics of the T-299's wiring. The wiring you found may have been for the running lights. It's amazing how much wire they stuffed into these units!

HI Gene,

Strait-Line Wall Scanner 150LCD. LCD display, locates wood, metal, A/C and has 3 sensitivity settings, 1.Drywall, 2.Paneling, 3.Flooring. See attached; had to pdf front and back separately and in B&W to keep under the 50kb per upload.

EMD_Driver: I hear ya; just because a light isn't nearby doesn't mean the wires for it aren't... I am so close on this one I can almost taste it... of course I am talking about a BBQ project here... If you can put your hands on any wiring schematics (or better yet, as you mention, actual pics of where the wires are), it will definitely help.

Best Regards,

Gary

Thanks for the info Gary, I apreciate it.

Good luck with the grill mount, hope you find the spot. Of course we will want pictures after you find it.

Do you know the specifics of how to hook a Weber Q to the low pressure hookup?

On RV.net there is a thread that has a post about the Weber Baby Q, don't know if it is the same as the Q.
