On June 7, 2010, the RV industry began celebrating its 100th anniversary.
According to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), 1910 was when mass-produced vehicles designed specifically for camping first hit the market.
The first non-tent travel campers were built in 1910 at the Los Angeles Trailer Works and Auto Kamp Trailers. No production campers or trailers from that first year still exist.
The earliest known surviving example of these is the towable 1913 Earl Travel Trailer. This wood-framed, 10-foot trailer was custom-built in Los Angeles for a California college professor and restored in 1980. Inside, two benches flanking a fold-up table convert into beds. It is on display at the
Recreational Vehicle/Manufactured Home Hall of Fame and Museum in Elkhart, Ind.
