We spent the better part of a week in Charleston, S.C., or more properly, everywhere
but Charleston. Penny and I did the house tours and history stuff a few years ago (before the Taj), so we opted to stay outside the city and tour the countryside. The weather was too perfect not to go to the beach and tour churches and plantations.
We stayed at James Island County Park, halfway between Charleston and Folly Beach. First-rate park. All the day-use areas are away from the campground. Full hookups - $32/night w/ Good Sam discount.
Here Penny does some stitching at site #99.
Rather than eat out for seafood all the time, we shopped the local fish markets. Here I am fixin' to whomp up a shrimp and scallop marinara sauce Monday night.
On Tuesday we went to nearby Folly Beach. Folks, this place is just like it was in the 60s. No
corporate retaurants, hotels, fast food - all mom-andpop locals.
The beach is fairly wide and the water was warm enough to swim. Here penny is doing some "people watching."
We ate our main meal Tues. and Thurs. at the Folly Beach Crab Shack. A true-to-life seafood shack, nary a screen on a window. Here's Penny on the way.
And here we are after a fine meal of oysters, crabcakes and fried shrimp (all local, caught that morning).
On Wednesday we went to the only tea garden in the USA, Chareston Tea Plantation.
We saw a 1500-yr.-old live oak (the Angel Tree),
and a church (St. John's Episcopal) on St. John's Island bathed in liveoaks and Spanish moss.
A great destination for at least a week if you've never been to S.C.'s low country.
