Thanks John, sorry for the delay, we were out of internet access over the weekend. Thanks for the thoughts, a lot of good info. As for towing without WD, Toyota specifies that WD needs to be used when trailer weight exceeds 5000#, so towing the T-1950 without is not unreasonible. We only tow without at under 5 miles an hour or so and the T-1950 has never been close to #5000. They don't give a hitch max weight, but it reasonable to assume in the 500# ballpark. I have absolute confidence in towing at the low speeds we tow at without WD, it is more very rough road at moderate speed (potholed, but also washboard and frost heaved pavement) that concerns me. The WD really seems to enhance the slamming of rough roads.
You thought on guys with toyhaulers is a good one, that is where I was looking, but didn't find much. I'd say in my experiance with that crowd that they are a group with very low WD use in general. We were at Killpecker Dunes in WY last year, which is a big OHV area and we saw a lot of examples of rigs without WD that needed it - I didn't see a WD setup and I was looking. In general, WD use in the off the beaten path areas in the West (i.e., my locals) is very low compared to here.
