New T-1700 Owner in Maryland
Hello to all. My wife and I have been looking at used campers going on two years, but never found one we liked in our budget without a bunch of issues (man has it been a learning process). I wasn't really familiar with Sunline until about a year ago and liked what I saw. So I joined the forum and learned even more things. A 1996 T-1700 Solaris came up on Craigslist and we bought it 2 weeks ago. Very happy so far.
There are only two things that aren't working. One is the Goldstar microwave and the other is the tv antennae booster. Must have looked at 100 microwaves and struck out finding one that will fit in the existing vent/mount. Not all that worried about the TV.
Bought a used 1989 Coleman Newport in 1992 and have been using it ever since. We're getting older and have grown tired of all the steps involved with a pop-up. Especially if we just want to take a Friday night and Saturday night trip. So our maiden voyage is this weekend and we're excited.
Having a bathroom is going to be nice, but dealing with the black tank doesn't sound like all that much fun. I guess I'll learn the ins and outs and it will become second nature.
Anyway, thanks to all who have posted such good info on here. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions.

Welcome to the Club.
Biggest thing with the black tank is always keep liquid in the tank when it's in use. Do not leave the valve open even when at a full service site. Keeps the solids from sticking to the tank surface. When you dump the tank run 3-5 gallons of water in before use. Some will add chemicals. My unit has a built in flushing system and by flushing it when I dump it I didn't need any. You can get a wand that attaches to a hose that you can flush the tank through the toilet (the toilet sets directly over the black tank).
BTW - No stupid questions here.....ask away....we love to help out newbies.

Thanks
So when traveling I can/should keep a few gallons of water in the tank?

Yes, the sloshing helps clean the crud off the tanks. In fact, one of the tricks of the trade is to drop a five to eight pound bag of ice into the tank before you tow it....the cubes sloshing around helps break up the crud.

T 1700 is a great two person camper I have a 1990. Yes on water in the black tank lots of it the toilet is designed to use little water so it doesn't hurt to add some.

I had honed in on the T-1700 Saturn not realizing they made a Solaris. I'm guessing the rubber roof is the main difference?

We sometimes use Happy Camper treatment in ours or before we go I will put some dawn and a bag ice in there to help clean it while traveling. When we get the I will dump it. The ice will knock things of the sides.

So the wife and I had a great weekend and the holding tanks weren't even that much of a problem.
I couldn't believe how easy it was to back into the campsite and be ready to just "camp" compared to the old pop-up. Likewise when packing up. Should have done this about 10 years ago.
Thanks for the tips and tricks!

They never made a Solaris version of the 1700. The only time there was any overlap in floorplans vs. trim of those two was 1997-99. Otherwise it was broken down by overall length. Yes, the Saturns lacked a few options over the Solaris, but the Saturn was generally all trailers under 22' and Solaris was over that.

I had 3 Solaris decals on the trailer and your 1996 Solaris brochure in the files sections shows a T-1700.

Yes, johnnybegood! I almost recently purchased a t-1700 Solaris also. There wasn't a Saturn version in '96---only a Solaris!0

You're right, I guess I had a brain fart. '95-'96 was Solaris only, including way down to a T-1550. The three 7' wide models, the 1550/1700/1740 were discontinued after the 1996 model year. The 17' models became Saturns (T-17A and 17B), but the 1550 was completely gone.

Jon...you don't know "older" ,lol! If my memory serves me AT ALL, I figure you are about 28 now...I remember when you were getting ready for college and when you were decorating your Sunline room at home. As a matter of fact, I have some of those pictures in some file somewhere but since I can't remember where, why don't you share those pictures with our "younger" members here--they really are impressive!( On a different thread, of course.) It's all good.
Do you know if they carried fabric over from year to year? My title says 1996 but the cushions look like rain forest green in the 1995 brochure.

Johnnybgood...years ago sometimes units manufactured late in the season got titled when they actually sold. Don't think that was the norm though..Sunline didn't throw much away as evidenced by the huge yearly auctions they held each Fall right there in their huge property. Now THAT was fun to attend! I am curious---is there anyone left in the SOC who also went to those auctions? Janalee
