What's the consensus (or is there one)?
As a new TT owner with no holding tank experience, I was wondering what chemicals folks swear by.
We plan, for now, to do weekends or one-week trips.

Teach,
We have been using TSP Orange Power for a least the last 3 years, and find it does a great job. You use 2 oz. for 40 gals. When temps.are around 90degs.or more I double the amount. I never have any odor problems at all.....

Something appears to be wrong with the website odorlos.com. Do not visit it. My browser flags it as a known malware site. Interesting.
However...
We use the product Odorlos and have found it be all it's advertised. I have some allergies and generally dislike any perfumes/chemical smells. An added bonus is that Odorlos contains valve lubricant. Some others do too, so it's a matter of reading the label to see. I think pretty much all these chemicals work as advertised so it's a matter of finding your preference and there may be others too that have no smell of their own.

We haven't used anything for the last 4 years, and have no problems or odors. I feel that using chemicals is like throwing money down the toilet.

Like Mike and Roz we rarely if ever use any solution in our toilet.

I would suggest don't use anything with formaldehyde. I hear it will kill any septic system you dump into quickly. I use RV Tech 100 for the black tank and nothing in the grey.
One important point with the black tank, in case nobody told you yet, is make sure there is plenty of water in it and use plenty for each flush to keep the solids loose. You should only dump when the black is nearly full so everything gets carried out. Often a short weekend campout does not put enough into the black tank to give a good "flush" when dumping so just add some water. Too much solid and not enough liquid results in what RVers call "The Pyramid of Doom". I think the name describes the condition adequately.

I do occasionally add a bunch of ice cubes and a little water after dumping and before hitting the road to the black tank via the toilet. The cubes bang around and loosen things up as you drive. I than dump at the next campground or when I get home.

We used a dry powder (sorry, don't remember the brand) that we mixed with water in a bucket and dumped in through the toilet. We did that the first year and have not used anything since. However, we do have a factory installed black tank flusher and use it every time we dump. We rarely camp without full hookups so flushing out the tank isn't an issue.

Interesting. Do you dump after a day or two, or can you go a week w/o any treatment?

ok, this is going to sound stupid but cheap pinesol type liquid cleaner from the dollar store seems to work fine - but i have used the powered stuff that walmart sell - aqua chem or something and it seems to work also.

I use bacteria and enzymes.
I use this in the black tank. Sea Zyme solves the problem of odor control and solid waste digestion in your RV And I use Washing soda to help soften the water. Arm and Hammer Washing Soda My enclosed tanks are pretty flat and the softer water helps everything not stick.
In the gray tank I use RV Products & Accessories RV-Trine. The liquid. It is an enzyme product.
I have tried Happy Campers (No not Lowell here on the forum....) Happy Camper - Odorless Holding Tank Treatment Black and Grey Water and it works well.
Since there are times I need to clean up at home, dump and run at the CG, I have an aerator septic system that cannot handle any type of high sanitizing agents.
I also have internal tank sprayers in both the black and gray tanks and use then after every campout. Key is start clean, dump and stay clean.
What I use and do works well, my tank sensors always work and I have no real bad ordors and I can dump it in my home septic system.
John
