Roof Problems on a T-2499 Solaris
I bought my T-2499 in November of 2005. I have taken good care of it but recently have found some soft spots in the roof. One at the front and two at the rear. I have taken it in to three different companies who tell me I need an entire new roof. There is no leakeage inside the trailer and with the exception of a rew spots where it needs to be cauked the roof looks to be in good condition. Prices for the new roof range from $3600. to $4000. After looking up the book value of this unit it doesn't seem wise to spend the money for a new roof. What do you think? I really need some good advice as I am about ready to trade it in on one of those "cheap" trailers that are on the market these days. Help! Captwalter

It's too bad you are so far away.. We have been blessed, with one of the best RV repair guys! Since I'm usually working, I don't always have time to do the immediately necessary repairs on our fifth wheel Sunline. Last year, I found a very soft spot on our roof and took it to our friend. We not only had a soft spot, our roof was severely water damaged. Here is the post, where I posted the repair pics.. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...html#post86641
The entire thread is worth reading.. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...-oh-11193.html
He gave me an estimate of $800 and did a lot more repairs, than just the roof! If you ever get your 2499 up this way, he can and will fix it right!

Have Trailer will Travel
Hi Gary: I really appreciate your response to my post. I imagine that my roof has very similiar damage to what you had. I am seriously considering traveling up to your RV man to have mine repaired correctly. Can you send me his name and telephone number so I can contact him? Would like to get the job done for what you paid. Do you think he will do mine for that amount? Many thanks! captwalter@bellsouth.net.

Hey Walter,
His name is Roger Miller and his phone numbers are:
Home: 540-858-3101
Cell: 540-686-2540
I spoke with him this evening and told him he should expect your call. He said all you need to do, is get it to him and he'll get you all fixed up. I cannot guarantee you will get the same price that I did, because I do not know your exact circumstances. There are a lot of variables to consider. Roof rubber condition, underlayment condition, etc... I can guarantee you, that he will treat you right and give you the best price available.
Gary

Hi Captwalter
You said soft spots, a camper of that year has a soft roof to start with depending on how one defines soft. That is unless you have bought the walk on roof option which has 3/8" I think OSB board.
Can you smell mold/musty if you sniff real good up close to the ceiling inside the camper near where you think the problem is?
Any chance of some pics of what you are seeing? any water stains of anything inside?
On the standard Sunline roof for your year they glued the rubber over what is called bud board. Bud board is a ~ 1/16" to 3/32" thick heavy dense corrugate material. It is not fluted cardboard like you see in plan boxes it is very dense, solid corrugate board. They just layed that over the rafters so there is no support between the rafters. So if you push on it it will go down and have a drum effect so to speak. It feels soft/spongy some times. You cannot walk on it or you will go right through it. Need to lay a tarp down and then put 1/2" plywood in pieces greater then 18 or more inches wide. I use 24" pieces by 4 foot long.
If there is a ceiling light fixture near the suspect spot, take it down, there will be a hole and then insulation above it. You can do the fell and sniff test there. If you have water up in the attic, it will leave tracks and smells.
Again trying to understand the soft description. If you have zero signs of water inside, absolutely no mold musty smell and doing the light fixture investigation or sniffing up near the trailer corners inside, well maybe your lucky.
I'm going out camping until Monday night but will check in then.
Hope your luck is good when you go looking.
John

Good point John! Most people do think of a roof as having plywood and could think the roof is defective simply due to the bud board. I like to think of bud board as really think cereal box cardboard Another good spot to take a look is the speakers if you take one of them out.
