Butyl Tape or Caulk? Roof Vent etc
I am putting new roof vents in and ran out of butyl tape, (8 ft rolls gor fast)- wondering if this stuff has been/can be used in its place.
DAP
300ML, White, BUTYL-FLEX Gutter and Flashing Sealant
Here's a gutter and flashing sealant that can withstand just about anything. Made from high quality butyl rubber, its permanently flexible, durable and watertight seal helps prevent leaks and damage. It won't crack or crumble-even when exposed to extreme temperatures, UV rays or intermittent water immersion. Great for sealing and bonding gutters, drain spouts, lap joints, flashing, roof vents, corrugated roofing, aluminium siding and more.
Adheres to a variety of surfaces
Non-staining; won't damage most plastics
No painting required
Outdoor use only
I will Dicor the top and potentially Eternabond as well.
Thanks Tim

Hi Tim
I'm assuming you are referring to this product. Yes/No?
DAP Products - Caulks and Sealants - DAP® BUTYL-FLEX® Gutter & Flashing Sealant
That is a caulk gun sealant like the Dicor. A possible concern is more in the thickness. When you use the butyl sealing tape it is about 1/8” to 3/16” thick and 1” wide. It fills a lot of space and squirts and conforms to the uneven surfaces on the roof and vents. It is also thick, meaning not runny liquid. The concern would be using the caulk in place of the sealing tap will it flow too much and not create that thick seal?
I have bought butyl sealing tape in like 20 foot roles. Like here http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/caulks-sealants/48463.htm
Hope this helps and good luck
John

John
I waited a week for a new supply of tape to arrive, after alot of searching it didn't seem anyone was using the stuff in the tube and I had other work to complete. Between the tape, Dicor and Eternabond I feel good about no future leaks. Getting alot of great info here on the right products to use.
I am making good progress, I have the back all repaired and put back together, the roof repaired and new vent installed, 75% of the interior is insulated again. A few more repairs and I will be ready to wire and begin finishing the interior.
I am looking for a replacement door, thought I had seen them for $250 but now I can't find anything for less than $380 which might mean rebuilding what I have.
Lots of pictures here:

stilll have a few to upload.
thanks tim

Tim,
Actually rebuilding the door is not that difficult of a job. Remove the aluminum frame that is around the current door, then you can remove either the exterior or interior skin or both if you wish. Then you can see how simple it would be to make a new "frame" for your door. Sure would be a whole lot less than the cost of a new door. I had to rebuild the door on my 1986 T-1661. And back then I didn't have as many tools/saws as I do now, BUT I still can't compete with JohnB

Hi Tim
OK seeing your Flicker file, now I remember you. OK your into a total overhaul....
Your door this one, photo-9 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
H'mm as Kitty said can you rebuild it? I never bought a door yet.... but if the prices you are showing the going rate....Wow
Are you any where near Elkhart IN? There are a lot of RV salvage places up there and you can just about build an entire camper from the "stuff" they have. They go around to all the RV factories and buy up all the over runs, over stocks etc.
See this place. I have not been to this one yet, but should be some time this year. RV Supplies « Bontragers Surplus Inc.
There are also place selling on Ebay.
With the amount of reconstruction you are into, a field trip to one of these places may help turn up a lot of "stuff"
Good luck and looking forward to your progress. It's cool seeing the campers being fixed up and restored.
John
