No, I just removed the battery and teased WD40 into every opening. Let it sit awhile then I blew it out with a can of compressed air I keep by the computer. I fixed a pendulum wall clock the same...

I'm not kidding

Dave, before you do anything, soak that sucker in WD40.
I put plastic wrap under the movement to protect the clock back, held it upside down and hosed 'er down. Let it dry and problem is gone.
