Repainted - this is not original, the water heater was replaced by a previous owner and the cover was rusted white paint.

You could clean off the paint from the little round window there and then you could see if the pilot is lit without having to open the door...

That is not a window - it is a round punch out thing, I think you can push it out and leave a hole. I was wondering what it was for.

Nope, that should be clear plastic. At night, you should be able to see the faint little light of the pilot lit to know if you need to re-light or not.

You are right, it is plastic. It was previously painted over, and I never looked at it closely. It just looked like a punch out thing. We have actually never used the water heater, even though it does work.
