T170 Star Ray awning.
I was going to attempt to open the awning on my newly aqquired 1990 T170 Star Ray camper today. There is no info in my manuals about the awning. I searched on youtube and all the vids of awning operation show a switch or clip up on the shaft/tube the awning is wrapped around that lets it ratchet open or closed. There is no swich or clip on mine. Also, on the videos it shows a strap near the center of the awning, wrapped in with it that you use to take it in and out with a ratchet type action. My T170 doesn't have that either, unless it's wrapped up tite, out of site. The locks and other hardware on the arms are understandable to me after watching some vids.
Can anyone shed some light on what I am missing here? Maybe a link to some information.
Thanks,
Dan

It should be spring loaded, release the locks and let it roll out. When you close it up it should roll right back up and then just set the locks to hold it in place.

Welcome Dan! Do you have any pictures that you can share of your awning? It's been a long time since I had anything but A&E. There were many other brands available in the early '90s and older, and they all work pretty much the same, so pictures may help us figure it out.

hopefully you can see a number off pics here. I appears to come out and set on a foot, different than any of the awnings Ive seen on youtube, where they remain attached to trailer. I haven't tried to open it yet, crappy day, and excuse the stains, I know it looks terrible. Haven't had any decent weather to attack that issue yet. And the ends of the rod the awning is wrapped around, what would that lead one to assume, just a spring loaded retract function?
Dan

Hi Dan,
Now your picture came through. To have it visible on here, you will need to put IMG tags around the link. [img] at the front and [/img] at the end. Flickr provides a special link for this- if you click the right arrow at the lower right corner of the picture, then choose the BBCode option along the top, and copy/paste that BBCode link into here to post your picture.
Just an FYI, your posts with the link went into the moderation queue on here because you're new, and posting links. I approved them now and they should show up. We have that set up for spam prevention, so a spammer can't create an account and start posting spam links. It shouldn't be a problem after you have 5-10 posts, you should see any post you make with a link immediately.
Regarding your awning, I haven't seen one like it before with the grooves in the arms like that. Some awnings do have side release sliders, Carefree of Colorado is known for that. It's possible the release part is broken off, do you see a spot on the back side of either arm about half way down that looks like something is missing?
Hopefully someone with an older trailer recognizes it and can help you with how to operate it. Sunline didn't put awnings on most trailers at the factory until 1993, so they were otherwise just dealer installed. Each dealer could stock any brand they want, and there were many different brands at the time.

Yours is the older style with the manual lock pins half way up the arms. You don't need to disconnect the lower pins to open it, that's just to put it in patio style. Does the awning move when you remove those lock pins?

If you cant find a lever on the end of the tube see if that whole end cap rotates to change direction from in/out.
The center strap is probably missing and can be replaced

I got it out. The end caps don't seem to rotate to change direction, it just has a retract direction. It is kind of pulling against it when it's out. Does that look rite?

Hi Dan,
Your doing great!!
I "think" the inner awning arms that slide up the outer arm are supposed to be up by the awning roller. You seemed to have them pinned in the middle of the outer arm or at least it looks like you have them pinned in place.
By your pic, the inner arms look like there is a black knob that when it is loose allows that inner arm to telescope out to the right length to allow the inner arm to reach up by the roller tube and then you tighten it. Normally there would be some type of latch up by the roller tube area to lock the inner arm in place. This creates a strong triangle shape against wind.
And to your door roller issue, once the inner arms are locked in place up by the awning tube, then you pull the awning outer arms out to raise the entire awning higher so the door will not grab the awning.
Yes, the roller is to protect the sharp corner of the door from cutting the awing.
Hope this helps
John
