Someone got me/My truck good!
My tow vehicle has been going through DEF pump assemblies and Ford couldn't figure out why. The pump had been replaced twice and while we were towing the Excel home from the dealer, it threw the DTC for the pump again. I managed to limp it home and got it to the dealer yesterday. This time, Ford told them to drop the whole DEF assembly and inspect it. This involved removing the tank, heater assembly and pump. What they found, was disgusting. It looks as though someone had dumped a quart of motor oil in the DEF tank. It was all milky and soupy. Since it was contamination and not a defective pump, Ford won't cover it under warranty. A call to my insurance company and I found out that it is covered. They are sending an adjuster and will hopefully have it done by next week. We were planning on taking the Excel out camping this weekend... Not happening now!
Here's a picture of what they found in the tank:

I have very little tolerance for an "act" like that if that was what happened. Do they make a locking cap for the future?
Camping this weekend, is the dually still set for hauling? (hitch on etc) It may be an option to sneak away.

New locking caps should be available in January...
The dually is in need of a few repairs, before it can be put back on the road.. My knee won't let me get under it, to do those repairs..

Problem is, that's not from the fuel tank. It is from the DEF tank.

Wow, that is really disgusting. I have heard of people putting DEF in their Diesel tank but not oil in their DEF tank. I wonder if its was vandals or the previous owner was just dumb.

Rich,
We've had the truck, for almost two years. It was fine, until the check engine light came on. I have to believe that it was malicious and that someone did it intentionally. I am the only one that has put DEF in it, since last January and I keep the fuel cap closed when I put it in. Getting DEF in the fuel tank, is a $12,000 mistake...

My how time flies. I did not realize you have had the truck for 2 years. You are correct Its got to be some #$&^%$# person. I am getting a lock fuel cap for my truck.
I am glad now I got a 2009 diesel which doesn't use DEF . I ran into a guy on vacation who told me that he made the mistake but caught it before he fired up, still cost him a lot of money to get towed and the tank dumped.

Hate to say it but Ford 6.7 DEF pumps have been problematic.
