power converter clicking

I'm looking for info on operation of the converter/charger. Since we are permantly hooked up to 120 shore power I removed the batteries from the TT. After about 1 week of a guest using the TT the converter began clicking with the lights dimming each time. It reoccures about every 10-15 min.
Could this be due to the batteries not being attached or should I look for another issue?

I finally had some time to check it out further. It's a Magnetek 3240 40amp converter. When I checked it it was clicking almost constantly, but seemed to stop after I exposed it from under the furniture. Could it just be overheating? Or will I need to reconnect a 12v battery?

Hi varminjcl

I have not had time to look up your converter but some of the older ones needed the battery in place to create sort of a capacitor to stabilize the load.

And some of the older chargers can cook out a battery is left on 24/7 for weeks/months on end as they do not drop down into a float charge mode.

The need is to find out if your brand/type converter can handle being unhooked from a battery and if left on the battery for days on end does it drop into float mode.

Some research will need to be done on the on the battery need however if you have a volt/amp meter we can show you how to figure out if the charger has a float mode by doing some voltage and current checks when the battery is know to be charged up.

If you hook a battery up and the clicking stops almost immediately well that tell us something. If the clicking is a fan noise rubbing, that will not change quick with the battery being in. If it is a fan problem the only way out is to repair the fan.

Maybe someone with that brand and vintage converter can chime in to tell there experiences.

Hope this helps

John

there is a thermal switch (2 of them in fact), one to kick in a cooling fan, one to kick it off fer good.

the fan draws that much? dunno but there is apparently a problem that the lighting comes off the battery side and the heavy draw stuff comes off the converter side - like a furnace? is that is what is kicking in every 15?

It seems the clicked has subsided, but I put a 12v deep cycle battery back on anyway. All I hear is a humming sound from it. I guess I need to open the case because I don't think it even has a fan..

Im into your exact unit right now and for all intents and purposes, use the scm from the magnetek 6300 series I reference in another thread - 'tis the same. the relay that clicks is powered from the same output wire (BLUE) from the end of the big diodes.

it drops at about 8v, which would be dim lights so you were losing voltage somewhere.

ok, I poured over a 3240 and have matched it up 95% to a 6300 and have pics to boot.

I will try to capture the schematic and 'Dr' it up to fit a 3240 - if someone can post it on this website....

And for an improvement...this link here:

PPS LINEAR CONVERTERS

Goes to the current 'owner' of the units - parallax, they have the SCMs (official neat looking ones) of the 3240 series, the 6300, 6600 etc, including troubleshooting manual. It seems the limit resistors and the relays are somewhat error prone (no click condition, click but no charge condition etc) and it has test steps.

Is there a way to add that link to some sort of library? We could theoretically upload all the pdfs but that might violate a copyright...

Still searching for more scms...
