Winterinzing - How much Pink Anti-Freeze

Our trailer came winterized last year when we bought it, so this is a first for us.

How much of the pink anti-freeze do I need to get?

If you have a bypass kit on the hot water heater (look for where the pipes enter/exit the heater, there will be either one valve and a tee, or two valves, that have a piece of pipe between the cold pipe and the hot pipe) approx. 2 gals.

No bypass, add 6 gals for water heater.

My 28 footer uses about 1 1/2 gals. for the pipes and I use the rest of the second gal. in the traps.

I seem to recall the following steps....

1) jack up the front of the trailer much higher than the rear
2) open the rearmost roof vent.
3) open the frontmost roof vent
4) close all other windows and doors
5) pour antifreeze in the front vent until it comes out the rear vent.

There is a informative piece on water heater bypasses in the Files section. It is worth reading, especially if your trailer does not have a bypass. The kits are inexpensive and very easy to install.

Since the pink RV antifreeze is going for $3-4 a gallon now, you'd probably pay for a bypass in one year just in the savings of 6 gallons of antifreeze. Some RV's have the 10 gallon heater, and that would make it even more worth while to install the bypass.

Like John, I too had to laugh when I saw that. I wouldn't want to think of the repairs needed in the spring. I bet it would keep the mice out though.

I usually have 3 gallons in “stock” for the task at hand. With that said I can and have completed the winterizing for pipes and traps with 2 gallons. I have learned that it is always wise to have extra for the possibility of forgetting the toilet fill or outside shower or the blue tote, because I have done all the above.

This year it took 3 gallons of the pick stuff.:idea:
It helps if you close the Low Point Drain before you put the pink stuff in.

LOL, that's the mistake I made this year too. I didn't mention the low point drain because I already had the extra gallon available so... it wasn't much of an issue. We do live and learn.

LOL....leaving the low point drains open has to be one of the easiest/most common OH $#!Ts in RVing!! I've told myself "Don't forget to close the low points dummy" and five minutes later I'm cussing myself as I hear the pink stuff hitting the driveway!! And, sadly, our low points are pretty accessible, being in the bottom of the bathroom vanity!!

Stick a bucket under the low point drain and catch the pink stuff when you "forget" to close that low point drain, unless your afraid it might have gotten diluted too much to be effective.

HUM OK, now I got it, "if" the low point drain gets left open and the pink stuff flows out and there is no bucket to catch it, I can & will say it was ALL Garys' fault because "HE" forgot to close the low point drain.

That "IS" his job, isn't it ???????????????
