Winter Has Arrived

Well here in Central Ohio we woke up to this. Actually this is after several hours of daylight and not as pretty. There is only about 2” of the white stuff, and it is wet and heavy… melting now.

We have a plant near Lynchburg VA and one of our department coworkers traveled there Friday to work the weekend. They where suppose to get hammered pretty good. Don’t know how they faired.

We are suppose to go out camping after Christmas, our traditional New Years camp out has been altered by Grand kid sitting. Right now it’s a free for all if we make it out or not. It could be 40 degrees and sun or snow and we stay home…

How did every one else fair from this east coast storm?

I can give you the Blacksburg, VA report which isn't too far from Lynchburg. Ross left work at 2:30 and it took him 1 1/2 hours to go 12 miles. His girlfriend works in Roanoke, 45 minutes away. She left at 2:00 and got home after 6:00. I'd say they got hammered. We have several inches here in Sinking Spring, PA but it alternates between really coming down and just flurrying. It's a great day for baking cookies

As of about 1/2 hour ago, we had 15 inches of this white crap. Gary had to use his "explorer" to get my sons "dodge pkup w/ plow" unstuck. Will have to really razz him about the dodge getting stuck and a FORD to the rescue, an explorer at that

Tweety, thanks for the VA weather report. Our plant is between Lynchburg and Roanoke, little town called Altavista. So yup, he’s stuck. There are 2 hotels 1/2 mile from the plant, the rest are in Lynchburg about 40 minute drive away on a good day. Hope he stayed local….

There's only about an inch here. I can still see some of the grass sticking through in spots. It is still snowing, very lightly, but they say we aren't supposed to get much at all. They also say that there's a storm coming next week, but depending on where a cold front goes, we may get really cold and no snow or we may get quite a bit. I'd take the quite a bit before I'd take the extreme cold.

i hope everyone is fairing well in the snow. Here in Warrenton we have about 19" of snow but the good news is that it stopped about 9 PM I am begining to think I am back in Pennsylvania. The DC TV station says its a record breaking storm.

The Sunline looks bleak sitting in the driveway with all that snow on it. It seems to be calling out take me to Florida.

John I think Lynchburg got about 2 feet and I understand that Route 29 between Lynchbrug and Charrotesville was shut down with many stranded motorists last nigh and this morning. Lets hope your rep. stayed put.

Funny you mention the UP. I just unofficially found out today that someone in my graduating class at school died yesterday up by the Soo in a snowmobiling accident...

I haven't heard any announcements from the school, so I don't know the details. I only know what I do from Facebook.

I've never met her and I can't say I've ever seen her from a picture.

22" in the front yard! Dug out five houses Sunday, two today. I have way too many older relatives!!

Bought a used snow blower today, if it never snows again, it paid for itself on the two today.

When we lived in Michigan, I had a John Deere 4100 Bucket Loader with a Box Blade in the Rear

I used to get up and start plowing our driveway, move to the neighbors who were both in the late 80's and plow theirs.

I usually spent a few hours cleaning up the street and would make some beer money from random people woul would pull over, ask if I could go clean their driveway off too.

That Box blade made clean-up a snap. You just backed up the drive, dropped the bucket and pulled it down to the end of the drive where the bucket would pick the pile up and dump it into the ditch.

Now, I sweep the sand off the walk way that keeps getting tracked up from guests filp-flops

When we call all our New England relatives I pledge not to mention the winter weather where ever we are (typically the southern tier of the country) unless asked.

Florida is warmer in December than NH was most of last summer though we are going through a minor cold spell. However if this was the temperature on the NH coast everyone would have their shorts on and be at the beach. Temperaure is somewhat relative.

My dad died at 45, very young, my saddest moment, teaching me life is bitterly short. One of his fondest sayings was that "life is a seies of choices, make the best you can".

I have not always succeded at making the best choices, but on the whole OK. I will say choosing to stop working and RV was a great choice, but not an easy one, partially because it requires a buy in from one's partner. Her support has been beyond a blessing.

We lost my dad at the age of 61, and I have just passed my 62d birthday. Between that and our near-fatal experience in October, I am gradually learning that it's not worth waiting for tomorrow to do something that you really want to do.

Regarding the weather in the south versus the north: we snowbirded for three or four winters. First thing I had to learn was that it is considered insensitive and gauce to snicker at Southerners all dressed up in down coats when the temperature is in the sixties.

I was 24 when my Dad died and felt I had to complete 'my list' by 45. I did the list and was joyous to still be alive, though a little frazzled by a ridiculous schedule.

As to the southerners (and I am one by education) on cool mornings, they all dress like they were in Alaska. I've never seen so many earmuffs. We always joke about the nanuk of the north look when in Florida on cool mornings but protectivly never say anything.

I had a business partner who spent a year in Antartica. One day it got up to zero and they all ran outside and played football in the snow wearing shorts and t-shirts. In some measure temperature and its effect on you is mental and activity related.

It looks like it will be a snowy winter for our northern friends. Be safe and do rejoin us some time.

Leo and I "vacationed" in the southern tier (of New York) over the Christmas Holiday......came home on Saturday night has a pleasent Sunday only 1 MVA & 2 snowmobile accidents -it has snowed all day today (Monday) - we must have at least 8" out there now with another 9-12 coming tonight......so much for our "sunny vacation"......
