What role does your camper play with the threat of a hurricane?

For many it could be shelter if power is lost as long as you prepare. Are the batteries up, is there gas in the bottles, is it parked away from power lines and trees, is there water in the tank.

We have a whole house generator but if there's no public water, we have the bathroom in the camper. Eventhough I already winterized, I filled the water tank so I have 43 gallons in reserve. If I need it I can open the valve to the pump and re-winterize later. If I don't need it I drain the tank later. Even with a generator for the house it's not enough for the electric stove so again the camper's handy if ready.

This morning, we filled the 60 gallon fresh water tank on Sunny 18. I also filled the water heater and bled the air out of the lines. I had already filled both LP tanks and also filled the two LP tanks from the 2653 yesterday. We also exercised both the Onan and the Champion generators yesterday. Kitty's son has his fifth wheel next to Sunny 18 and will use it if necessary. We'll both have power.

We also went grocery shopping today. The grocery stores close by were packed today. I had to drive to mom's and get her house ready for the storm, so I stopped at a grocery store close to her house. It was a typical Sunday at that store... Very lucky on that one!

Since Sunny is under the carport, we/it should be reasonably safe. If necessary, the truck is fueled up and ready to tow.

Good point, I also checked the tires, filled the truck and am ready to tow if necessary. I filled a 6 gal can to replace the water in the tank if I need to turn the valves and fill the water heater. Unless needed, I'm still winterized. For the house I ran the genny and have 3 days of gas in the ready. The Honda is ready too. I hope it was all for nothing. Brother in law from close by Schoharie County is coming tomorrow with his Winnie, He's just getting over the damage from Irene a year ago.

The camper has propane and is in the garage I have a 6KW generator and am 120' above the flood plain. The gen set won't run the electric range but the camper will heat what ever we need the furnace is oil and the generator will run that the well, lights and the ham radio! They are calling for winds to over 60 MPH even here in Maine well we survived the huge ice storm here years ago with just the generator and a wood stove so were are all set. Part of our land is on the Saco river and early summer we had 12" of rain in less then a week and the fields were 6 1/2 feet deep in water so I guess this is nothing new.

I would still plan to re-winterize the water pump even if you don't use it. Knowing how delicate they are and how easily they break from just a little bit of water in them freezing, I wouldn't chance it.

Sunline Fan, thanks for the tip, but I have a shutoff valve on the water line leaving the fresh water tank going to the pump, water can't go pass it. Thanks. Chuck and Terry

With a generator on the tractor, we can run the well pump, freezer, refrig. and, if needed, the oil furnace. Outlets that can be used for microwave, coffeemaker, etc. We also have the Honda generator if needed. We have a wood stove and can heat with, and cook stuff on it if need be. The Sunline is (hopefully) secured in its current outdoor location, away from trees. It is nice to know that we have the camper amenities, like the propane stove, if we need it. With the high winds expected, we'll opt to stay in the house, not the Sunline!

Also, it is nice to have that stash of extras... battery operated flashlights and radio, tarps, first aid kit, rain gear, percolator, etc. from the Sunline!

Sounds like the Northeast is ready for the most part. Watching the weather channel and seeing all the people without power already and Sandy is not even on shore makes me think many other people will wish they had a second home. Hope the hurricane dies out soon after hitting the bank.



As for preparing for hurricanes we fill for water, LP and canned goods. The camper is always stocked but for the water so we can keep it fresh as possible when needed. Food and other personal items are kept in the house since it is safer than the camper. We park the camper close to windbreaks, have extra jack stands placed to try to make it more stable and Keep any tree limbs cut back and loose items in the yard stored so they do not become projectiles in the wind. Much damage is done by flying chairs from your neighbors house.

Stay safe and be prepared to spend a long time waiting for the hurricane to pass.


Edited to add: Our neighbors that have the metal RV ports will also add cross bracing to the open ends for extra strength against wind from the sides.

We lost power for about 18 hours. No other problems. Two homes within 15 miles of us destroyed by falling trees, unfortunately one fatality.

We ended up not needing to seek shelter in Sunny either. The power did go out a few times, but it did come back. I haven't yet been out to survey the damage, but we fared well. Kitty was able to sleep in her own bed all night.

No power all night went out to the camper to make coffee brought the hot water back and the power was on. Nothing too much here wind gust to only 33, 2.5" of rain that really is not too unusual for us. The river is quite high but it all ready was I'm sure in a day or two it will be over the banks and in my fields. Never even got to start the generator after servicing it and filling it with gas! Glad I don't live in NY city.

About 20 hrs with no power. Only made my wife some hot tea in the camper and sat in there with lights, was getting ready to cook dinner in there when the power came back on..

With the storms we have had up here the last few years it makes me glad I had the 30 pine trees taking down around my house.

Talked to my sister in MD yesterday she has no power except for her generator and probably won't for a week or two. The pole by her house is at 45 degrees with the anchor ripped out of the ground huge old trees down across her driveway and the only access on the main road is about 1/4 of a mile the rest of the road is blocked in both directions with trees.

I moved our Sunny further out in our driveway so it was a far as possible from any trees. Then I had it full of water and plugged in with the fridge and hot water on in case we had to "camp" in our driveway. I also had the generator ready to go. But, thankfully, all of the prep was for nothing as Sandy spared us her worst and we never lost power or any trees. Now, I just need to move it back to it's usual parking spot, drain the water tank and think about winterizing.

We moved the sunny away from trees and gassed up the generator. We had in the 60 MPH range wind and lost power for about 30 hours. Got it back some time last night. A bit too windy to camp in the sunny. No damage, just small limbs down. Grateful!
