Any recomended campgrounds around Virginia beach area, within an hour radius?

I stayed at VA Beach KOA a few years ago. Not bad. Close to everything.

Holiday Travel Park is great and also has a parking lot at the beach for campers. If you have dogs, the park has huge dog park only for those staying at the campground. The restrooms are sparkling clean, there is a pool and playground and the grounds are nicely maintained. The park is located on General Booth Boulevard just down the street from the KOA.

May I add this park has a "frontage road" that sneaks you over to a convenience store so you can bike to get food and ice. There's a traffic light there to aid in turning left toward the beach. The paved bike path continues to the aquarium then on to the beach.
And for a true Southern, honky tonk experience "Bone Shakers'" biker bar is a quarter mile or so south.

Are you coming to hang at the beach or tour the whole area? In other words, are planning to visit Jamestown, Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg?
Are you looking for a "resort" where you will spend the majority of your time, or are you looking for a place to park and head out to other sites?

We will be touring around with a few days on the beach.

Just my opinion. If you are touring the area, (especially the colonial stuff), you may want to stay closer to Williamsburg and drive to the beach. Both the KOA and Trav-L-Park are located south of the beach. To get to Wmsbg., you'd have to traverse the entire area just to get out of town (so to speak). Traffic in that area is bad.
I live in Richmond so touring that area is a one hour drive for me. I've not camped near Williamsburg. I did see the article in the last issue of Trailer Life about this place http://www.anvilcampground.com/ .
From what I hear, this park is also a good bet American Heritage - Home
Have fun in the Old Dominion.

American Heritage is probably one of the best campgrounds i've stayed at.

Thanks all, we prefer some privacy ie trees and bushes, we are from the northeast so thats what we have here, I'm thinking closer to colonial Williamsburg.

So far I have been inclined to stay with the State Parks, as I too prefer "trees-n-bushes" . No hook-ups per-Se, but more to my liking.

I am by myself, thus no kids to cater to.
