Vent Cover

Hello to all you very knowledgeable Sunline owners! We have a 2004 2499 and have just discovered the vent in the bathroom has a crack in it. The crack is not visible until it is cranked open so it still seals okay I assume. It is also covered with a Maxi-Air cover. A local dealer says they sell the cap itself. I want to know if anyone has changed a cap on its own? Is it very difficult to change? Can it be done without removing the whole vent assembly from the roof. I know I need to remove the Maxi-Air just wondering what I will find when it comes off.

The cap is easy to change as I found out this past summer when mine "departed" somewhere between Acadia Maine and Wells Maine.

You will have to remove the screen inside (2 small screws, hard to see) and the crank handle. Next remove the screws holding the crank so you can remove the litle plastic wheel from the slot in the cover. After you remove the Maxi-Air cover you will see a tab on the cover to bend and allow the cover to slide off the hinge. Since you have the Maxi-Air cover it is ok to wait for warmer weather to change the cap.

As far as pic's see here. As Gene said, this is not a hard thing to fix. While this is replacing the entire flanged vent you can see the pics of the inside shroud off Gene was talking about and the outside roof area.

Hello Gene;

WOW very sorry to hear you lost your's! I hope there was no damage to the TT. Thank you very much for the reply. Yes I was figuring on waiting for good weather since the TT will have a hole in the roof for a couple hours. I will feel much better when it is all fixed. We head for Florida on April 17. Had to cancel last year as I fell and broke my left heel bone while fixing a "small" split in the seal around the fridge vent. Now, there is no way I go up without DW holding the ladder. Let this be a warning to all not to take your ladder talents for granted. BE SAFE NOT SORRY!! I have a couple nasty creases in the side to remind us and show to those who may feel the need to fix their roof. A single moment could save a lot of heart ache.

Wow you always come through with plenty of information. I hope i don't have to take it all out but will feel okay doing it with that information. I am surprised they do not last longer with the Max-Air covers on to keep out the sunlight.

No damage to the TT Ted. After we set up we were going out for ice cream and I noticed the vent was "open", went to crank it down and discoverd it was gone!

John pointed you to the threads I was thinking about and here is one more in case you are looking for the screws to remove the screen. It took me a long time to find them as they are hard to see.

Glad that foot is better and you can get in some camping this year, I remember you lost the whole season last summer. Don't take any chances.

Yes I was figuring on waiting for good weather since the TT will have a hole in the roof for a couple hours.

After you remove the broken vent cover, set the Maxx-Air back in place and spin the nuts on loosely to hold it until you return with the new cover.

In 2004 Sunline had a bad batch of roof vents. They changed manufactures or something. The steel was not treated right and the plastic was, well junk. On my T2499, they sent me 3 new ones under warranty. On the 2004 T310 well Sunline went out by then as I bought it in 2007. The camper had max air covers on it too. But those bad vents where on that one too. Even thru the Max air covers the sun beats the plastic under it. My fell apart in pieces and the metal was rusted so off they came.

I thought I linked on that last post to life time replacement covers made by Camco. They are made from polycarbonate which resists the sun better along with the UV inhibitors they put in.

I spray the inside and out of the new vent covers with 303 UV protectent when installing even a brand new cover.

When I had a hickory nut crash through a vent on our '98 in a rainstorm, in the middle of a November night, I placed a trash bag over the shattered vent then reclosed it keep the rain out. Next day I got a new cover. Since then I always carry a spare and never park under nut trees in the fall.
