TV Cabinet Mod

Yep, I tackled the TV cabinet mod today. Needed to "beef" up the side wall so I could install the wall mount for the 22" flat panel TV. I did manage to locate "studs" at the front & rear of the side wall, then I used contact cement to attach the "first" piece of birch plywood, then more contact cement and a second piece of birch plywood, and screws into the "studs" Here are some pics:

Hindsight is a wonderful thing,"IF", I had ordered a longer wall mount the TV might have swung out far enuff to be viewed from outside. Main goal of the TV mod was for storage behind the TV, so once I put "stuff" in there ther TV will stow near the front of the cabinet.

Forgot to post sofa mod pictures, will do them later.

very nice kitty , what kind of tv is that? it looks like it has a bullt in dvd player, I want to add two to my 246 on in the bed room and above the fridge . I cant stand that flip up tv shelf in the bed room I ve clocked my head on that thing in the middle of the night so many times . and way great pix hope to meet you at the M&G Dan

Good job!!

You and I are on the same mod track some times.... Once it was that beastly couch and how to get to the HW bypass valve and now the swinging flat screen.

You have given me some things to ponder as I "thought" you where going for a wood swinging door concept. As this is where I was heading. But you now have one of the TV arms which works very nice too.

Did you change your approach along the way or did I get the wrong impressions as I thought you where going to have your cabinet maker guy make you something.

Yesterday I finally finished my axle, suspension and new tire overhaul so I can start back on the wood projects.

I should meet you at the M & G, I'm in site # 88, and I'll be the one with the 3 X-Pens attached to Sunny and "SPA" steps at the door. The TV is a 22" Sharp with builtin DVD player. First time I've bought a TV with a builtin DVD, so hope it lasts a while.

Thanks for the nice compliments. You are correct, initially I was going to have my cabinet maker do a door there, BUT, the more I looked at it, I feared that the factory supports at the front of the opening would possibly need to be cut/trimmed in order for the door to fit & operate properly, so I went down the other road to the pivoting bracket. "IF" I were purchasing the bracket again, I would try to get one that was "longer" when extended so that the TV could be seen from outside. BUT, it was only $21.87 off E-Bay, so I might search around some and ya never know, I just might end up replacing it down the road sometime. It has 3 pivot points, and it also pivots to allow you to tilt the TV up or down. It just needed to be about 4 inches longer for outside viewing Now that I have done this mod, I can put the VCR behind the TV and then I will probably have the cabinet maker make me a door for that open area below the TV. Seems like I'm always tinkering around out there. I'd really be dangerous if I had your arsenal of tools

Nice work Kitty, looks good. Too bad it didn't work out that you can angle it out the door. Wonder if you could add another single and double bar extention to the mix to give it twice the length? Might create a weight issue, not sure what the arm's current rating is for weight.

Are you planning on traveling with the TV mounted or are you going to unhook it while you're on the road?

To make mine easier to take on and off I went to Lowes and matched the screws with round thumb screws that have the allen fitting in the center. I keep the appropriate allen wrench velcro'd under the shelf I installed below where my TV hangs. Now when I want to attach or remove the TV from the arm I don't have to run around and find a screw driver or worry about worn screw heads from being taken on and off all the time.

I'm sure you're feeling a sense of accomplishment with your recent insullation additions and this great convenience mod for the TV.

It will travel with the TV installed on the "arm", if you notice in the pictures, you can see the "base" is still attached to the TV. I left the base on to assist in the support. so I feel that it will travel fine connected to the arm. It will pivot out of the cabinet with the base attached. Might look a little odd, but it works for me.

Yes, I did notice the base will give it support while it's stowed if it happens to get bounced up and down, nice precision on your part for the mounting height!

If you're going to go that route I'd suggest putting in throw pillow behind it and in front so it doesn't swing around and bang up the TV in an unexpected sharp turn.

Good Morning Jason,

Thanks for the kind words. What you can't really see in the picture is a long piece of velcro fastened to the back corner of the cabinet and wrapped around the TV, so it really can't swing any, but I might make a small padded pad that I can drape over it for front & back protection. Something like a saddle pad, but smaller that way it should stay in place better than 2 seprate pillows.

My next project---------------gosh I have no clue, but I'm sure something will come to mind once I attend the Sunline Rally
