The Upper Bunk of a Sunline T-1550.

Hello Sunnies,

I have a 1988 T-1550, but the Upper Bunk didn't come with any mattress or anything and I can't seem to picture what is supposed to be there.

If one were to just put a mattress, they'd probably fall through the cabinets!

So, I'm not sure what the configuration was supposed to be that would still fold up properly.

Can anyone explain exactly what the Upper Bunk mattress setup is supposed to be? Is it hinged in any way??? Just a rectangular piece of foam? or is it multiple pieces?? How THICK is it supposed to be? Is there a backer board? How thick, etc???

Just can't seem to picture it...!

Any pics and dimensions would be amazing!

Ps. I weigh about 140 Pounds....Any adults ever slept on that Upper Bunk and lived to tell about it?? Ha. ha...!

It's a pretty shaky setup my T1700 was like that I removed the center section and flipped the cabinet doors up and secured them and just use it for storage. It's a much better storage area than a bed! On mine the trim for the windows supported the bed ideal!

Very shaky setup. Mine also rests on the window trim pieces.

It is probably the reason that this used Trailer didn't even come with any mattress up there. Prior Owner must have realized it was better for cabinets than any potential bunk arrangement.

Maybe going to follow suit myself.

Always good to have options though.

Mine has a bed directly below it so by taking the center section out it even made it a lot easier to get in and out of the lower bed and as a couch your a lot less likely to hit your head on it. The storage is more than useful and it's great place to hide things. I mounted a radio in the center and have book shelf speakers inside the cabinet. The mattress that was in mine was maybe 1 and half inch foam at the most thick. Flipping the cabinet up leaves a gap at the top of maybe an inch or so but who cares at least to me it's now functional!

Sounds like you made the most of that space...! Mine doesn't have much of a center section. Just two wide-ish cabinets and maybe only 6" in between them...without making a huge mess of it, probably can't follow suit.

Was kind of thinking of making that top bunk sort of a meditation/reading space, but at 140# or so -- not really sure the window frame 1"X3" ledges would hold up too well...

Nervous about climbing up there and then having the entire thing collapse...and make a huge mess.

So, maybe just going to keep it as cabinets. Oh well!

I'm thinking that even if I were to fashion something nice
to go up there, that I'd be too scared of it collapsing under an adult weight.

Though I only weigh about 140#....it just doesn't seem super sturdy.

I think I read somewhere that the max weight is 120#, so I might be tempting fate to go up there and hang out. Seems like such a great meditation/reading/napping space, but maybe just isn't solid enough to do it.

A picture would be awesome, but probably won't be able to replicate and use the space given the weight concern.

The official published max weight for Sunline cabinet bunks is 100 lbs.

Thank you for the clarification on the weight limit...It does "feel" that 100# would be about the max...

I'm going to bail out on my plans to make it a little meditation space.

Wouldn't be too relaxing to collapse with the bunk and destroy everything.

Oh well....Next trailer.
