Surprises & A Question

Howdy every one;

First the surprise :D . We were camping at Wheatley Provincial Park this week end and though we have had this GREAT Coach since Dec 11/06 there is always more to discover. This weekend I was just walking around looking and wondering about this great 2499 and thought what is that in the back bumper? Pull the cap off and there is a Crossword lottery ticket from Michigan. Thought oh well then I started looking deeper and there is a drain hose for the dump tank. Left by the owner who had the pleasure of using this TT before us. Now i have enough to go across our yard from TT to sewer clean out.
Now the question. The Easy Lube hubs have a black plastic cap over the end. Does it just knock off or does it unscrew. I figure it knocks off but I do not want to destroy them. We leave Monday on a long trip and I would like to lube it before we go.

Hi Ted,

It's always nice to find a surpurise :).

The EZ-Lub rubber plug should just pop off.

I was advised by a RV Tech to be careful not to overlub, he told me 3 pumps of a greese gun should be sufficient.

Ya gotta love finding good items you never knew you had.

In reguards to pulling the EZ-Lube cap off. Just pinch the edge of it with you fingernails and it should pull right out of the hub. Once you do it the first time, you'll laugh at how easy it is.

HI I seem to have failed to get my point across :oops: I have fancy hard plastic nut and hub covers on my wheels and I can not get to the soft rubber hub grease cover. I do not want to break the hard plastic cover taking it off. So I assume I can just tap it hard and it will pop off?? Ted Yes it is funny how a used sewer hose can make an RV'r smile :)
 
Ted, try turning the cover counter clock wise and it should pop loose

They're right, grab ahold with both hands and turn counter clockwise and it should come off. It'll be very tight, but it'll come off.

the hub and lug covers should have a notch on the inner edge to get a regular screw driver under them to pop them off.

On my '99 Sunline, the nut covers have to be pulled straight out. I actually have a tool for that which has a "grippy" plastic coating on the part that grabs the nut covers. Since lug nuts need to be retorqued often, I left all the nut covers in a bag hanging in the garage a long time ago.

My suggestion to get the lug nut covers off is to take a large pair of channel-lock pliers, and grip the nut covers using a towel or other cloth to prevent damage and gently pull them off.

My hub covers have little metal tabs all around them that are gripped between the wheel and the hub. The only way to remove my hub covers is to pull the wheels and they will fall off.

The hub covers are also in the bag with the lug covers. When I sell the trailer someday, I will just pass all that on to the next owner. They look pretty, but they get in the way of maintenance, especially the lug nut covers.

If your nut & hub cover looks like this:

Then the nut covers pull straight off, as Steve indicated.
The hub cover can be removed with a standard screw driver. There’s a notch on the bottom edge.

However, if your nut & hub cover looks like this:

Then use a standard screw driver to pop it off. There’s a notch on its edge along the wheel rim to place the screw driver.

Well Hutch I say that you gave the answer I wanted. I have the ones in the top photo. All black and pretty but I also agree that maybe the belong in the garage due to checking wheel nuts from time to time. Before we bought this TT we had a PU and lost wheels twice. I do like to check wheel nuts en route.
So thanks to everyone who replied and help me figure this out. We leave Mon. at 6:00 am for Winnipeg Manitoba and I do not want any wheels arriving before me :wink:

Actually Ted, I think I was wrong wrt the hub cover removal on the top picture.

The more I think about, I think the hub cover came off when you removed the wheel, as Steve indicated. The top picture was from our previous Sunline (a 1999 T-2670) that did NOT have the EZ-Lub axle. My memory is not as good as it used to be :)

Look at the hub cover closely and you should be able to see if it's inserted on top of the wheel rim or if it fits behind the wheel rim. It should be obvious if you look closely at the wheel rim around the hub.

I've got the good old fashioned kind that have to be pulled apart and gone through after the M&G :roll:.

I pulled off my lugnut covers before I towed mine home because I found most of them were cracked and I didn't want to lose them. I also found one of the center caps was broken and just sitting there.

The Final Word

Well Thanks to all who responded to my question. I went out and tried to pry the hub cover off and it would not come off. I had to remove the wheel due to the metal tabs. After I get it of I see regular dust cups so it is the old style which I have done lots of with my two other trailers. It will also get me to look the brakes over at the same time.
So Thanks again for the help. I always know when I come to the right place I get all the answers
