Hey Everyone

I just joined but I have been visiting this site for awhile. My wife and I are trying to deal for a Sunline and hope to have one by this Spring. We are both retired and plan on doing some local traveling and then in a year or two take our dream vacation up the ALCAN. Just wanted to say Hello and Happy New Year.

Success and Welcome

Hope your successful getting a Sunline. A trip up the Alcan is a blast, be sure to save plenty of time and to get a copy of the Milepost, available at most bookstores or AMazon. It is absoultely the best road guide ever. It tells you where everything is, including every sign along the way. It's fun to get and read.

Good luck in your search,

Norm and Ginny Milliard

Welcome MOKID

Glad you found us as we are glad to have you with us.

It sounds like you are still looking for your Sunline. Do you know what model or floor plan you may be after? With all the members we now have, odds are good someone may have one very close to what you are looking for to offer insights to that floor plan.

You have selected a very good brand of coach at any age of camper. You will be happy with the end choice.

Good luck and again welcome to the club.

John

Wonderful Welcoming

Thanks everyone for making us feel part of the group. We are looking at a Sunshine Solaris 1950. It has the floor plan that we like and fits our Tow
Vehicle which is a Ford Expedition. I do have a question and maybe this isn't the right place to ask but the Expedition has a tow package and with that it has a rear leveling system which is basically air shocks. My question is should I use an Equalizer Hitch also? We have located the 1950 that we want and are presently working with phone calls, photos and emails as the trailer is 500 miles from here.

Our previous tow vehicle(s) were Navigators, which had the leveling system. You should use WD, because the shocks aren't that strong. It will help level the vehicle off to pick up any slack from the WD, which shouldn't be too much with a 1950.

Is the coach you're looking at just through word of mouth/newspapers, or is there an online ad? If there's an online ad, post the link here so we can all check it out and tell you if it looks like anything is wrong or anything that could potentially be a problem so you know going into it and can negotiate accordingly.

Jim, yes you still need the Weight Distribution hitch. A few reasons, your reciever is only rated to hold 500# with no weight distribution. You will over load it without the WD.

The rear axle in the Expy is soft just like any other 1/2 ton SUV. I had the Tahoe, same problem. The WD hitch transfers the weight off the rear axle and moves a lot back to the front axle and some to the TT axles. Air shocks only lifts the rear of the truck and does not move the weight around or off very much of the rear axle.

When setting up the WD, let the air shocks go empty, apply WD until the front fender returns in height to unhitched height. Measure before and after. Then turn on the truck. The air shocks will lift a little bit in the back that is OK but the weight is already moved around by the WD hitch. Then level out the hitch shank ao the TT is level once the air is on.

OH and air up your rear TV tires to max air pressure. The fronts may need some more as well, it is a towing air pressure experiment on the frotn tires but the rear ones will for sure need full cold side wall pressure when towing for stability on those P tires.

Good luck and any questions fire away. If you want to talk on just hitches and TV, post in the Towing forum here on this site. There are a number of us glad to help.

John

PS Our 1st Sunline was 350 miles away from home. The 2nd Sunline was 500 miles from home. Us Sunliners have no problem traveling to get a great coach to camp in.
