I just got my husband into camping not too long ago so am not sure how much winter camping we will do. We started with tent camping a few years ago but moved up quickly. I can assure you if we do winter camp it will be SOUTH of were we live. He still has some work to do on the Sunline and we need a larger vehicle to haul it with.

Just head SOUTH in the winter.

Folks......

Not really snowbirds, but we tend to spend 2-3 weeks in Florida each winter season (in 2009, that's planned to be in March).
We've two favorite Florida campgrounds. One for overnights on the way southward, and one for our week-or-more stays.

==> We especially like Oaks & Pines RV Park at Lake City, FL as the overnight stop. And it welcomes Passport America members (that's 50% off). For our routing (I-95 South to Jacksonville, I-10 West to Lake City, and then I-75 Southward), it's a great stop.
==> Our destination choice is Quail Run RV Park at Wesley Chapel...just about 15 miles North of Tampa. Great place with great people.

Florida Parks

Florida State parks are among the best anywhere. Our favorite is Henderson Beach State Park in Desting, Fl. It's in the panhandle of FL.

The sites are located right behnd the beach, 60 sites all with vegetation, and the finest sand I've ever seen. They have a mile of beach for s60 sites.

Another favorite is Fort Desoto. I think it's a county park just below St. Pete. It's on an island accessible via a bridge, 150 sites, mostly with vegetation, tons of beach, good boating and an old fort. Nothing else on the island, they have the whole thing yet not far from St Pete.

They both have water and electricity.

There are a ton of FL State parks and I've never been disappointed.

Snow birds

We spend two months in Florida in the fall (we come home for Christmas), in Florida we stay at several State Parks. Big Lagoon, St. George Island, Florida Caverns we also stay at a city park in Sopchoppy which is approx. 30 mi south of Tallahasse and 9 mi north of the gulf coast, check it out it is a great park for the price.
We go back on the road in January and head for the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. We stay for one month in Mission at Oleander Acres and one month at Isle LaBlanca county park on the southern most point of South Padre Island. We love being in the Valley cause we can go into Mexico crossing by foot into a delightful town called Progresso. There is plenty of parking on the US side and then a short walk across the bridge over the Rio Grande River. We love to bargin shop and enjoy the great mexican food and entertainment.
Can't wait to leave in a couple of weeks.

We are not going to be heading South, but instead we are heading North. We are joining several friends at MacGregor PP in Ontario for New Year's We are looking forward to a large warm bon fire, and a New Year's Eve Pot Luck . MacGregor PP is open throughout the winter season. They have prepared both snowshoe and cross country ski trails as well as they have flooded the roads in one of the closed campground loops to create a large skating rink. We are really looking forward to this camping trip.

Effectively we will be finishing our 2008 camping season on Dec 31 and at the same time starting what we hope to be a great 2009 camping season on Jan 1.

Yosemite

We've just reached Park Sierra in Coarsegold, CA. It's an Escapee park and very unusual.

There are a few hundreds sites, not your parallel parking type of park. All the sites are scattered among the hills of the park, tucked here and there, the contours and vegetation left in place. Just a wonderful full hook up park for $15 a day.


If you're thinking about full timing Escapees is a good group.

Escapees

Escapees was started by a group of full-timers, there are now over 100,000 members, though all are not full timers. They publish a great magazine, have a mail service, and 20 or so campgrounds around the country. Some of the campgrounds you can buy a site, some are coops where you virtually buy a site, but get your money back when you don't want it any more and some where you can lease a spot. Plus they have overnite and rental spots.

One unique thing is they have an assisted living spots where people stay in their rigs, meals and services brought to them. I think it's about $600 a month.

As well they have a reduced rate book for normal campgrounds (15 to 50% less). Their own campgrounds are about $15 a night, less by the week or month, and ($2-5 for dry camping).

They do have a forum that is very good but not rig specific; the Sunline site is the best for Sunline info. However if you're a full timer or a half timer Escapees is great. The people are real Rvers, our camp host here is actually the first person other than ourselves that we've met that has driven the Labrador Highway.

Park Sierra

A couple of people have asked me abou Park Sierra.

It's our favorite Escapee park located in the foothills of the Sierras, at about 1800 ft. It's located about 30 miles from Fresno, a major city and about an equal distance from Yosemite.

It's an unusual park because the RV sites are scattered among the hills, most of the natural vegetation left in place.

We try and roam around anywhere that has comfortable temperatures.

1st year on the road that meant Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas

2nd year the Southwest - Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, California and Baja Mexico

this year we'll leave mid-January and head South again before we have to work our way West to report to Yellowstone for work next summer

We aren't snowbirds but we could spend a winter here at James Island County Park in Charleston, SC. The sites are huge. It has full hook ups and WiFi that actually works, laundry, bicycle paths, a small lake, and Charleston 10 minutes away.
