Hi all,

My name is Joe Doerer. In October, 2006 I purchased a Sunline Solaris T-2499 and I have continued to enjoy it from then until now. It has been a great camper with almost all of its amenities original and working fine. Unfortunately, time has not been kind to the roofing material which is in need of replacement. It's a shame because the rest of the camper is still fully functional. The roof is still intact but it has become too soft for me to sell it as is without feeling guilty. Although I have been involved in the maintenance and repair of the camper throughout its life, now that I am in my 70's I do not have the desire or facilities needed to dismantle and reinstall a new roof. If someone has the time/ability to replace the roof I would be happy to sell it at a substantially reduced rate from its $5400 NADA book value. If not, I will piece it out and/or use the appliances for other applications. I am open to any interested party with the understanding that even though the roof is still intact, it has to be replaced.

Thanks,
Joe Doerer

Hi Joe, if you don't already know most Sunlines in the 2000s did not have a walk on roof, it was a special order option. They used a EDPM rubber membrane glued to what it basically a thick cardboard. This type of roof will have some flex normally and will feel as it may be "soft" compared to a walk on style. If you press on the roof with your hand and it depresses or stretches like a rubber band then moisture has made it's way in and the base bud board as Sunline called it (the thick cardboard) has deteriorated and the roof would need repaired or replaced. A moisture meter could help determine how wet it is if you were looking to point it out to potential buyers. Most likely if the roof has failed there will be rafters or wall joists that will need repaired as well.

Good luck with the sale, the T2499 is a popular floor plan and someone who wants to put in the time can get a really nice trailer if all fixed up.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I purchased my Sunline at the Hershey RV show in 2006. At the time I ordered it with the walk on roof. I wasn’t quite sold on the concept of laying down boards to do annual roof checks. And I was concerned about any potential snow/ice load. When the camper showed up at the dealer I learned the walk on roof was not installed. I also learned Sunline had just gone into bankruptcy proceedings. My choice was this Sunline or no refund. I am glad I stuck with it. It has served me well, including full time living for two months a few years back. But now the roof is soft and depresses near the right front corner. I do not have a moisture meter but I would be surprised if there wasn't any damage to the ‘base bud board’ and the nearby rafters. The roof is still intact and there is no water dripping inside the camper on rainy days but I have to believe this is the beginning of the end for this roof and it's 'base bud board'. If there’s no one interested in taking on a project I would rather part it out to other Sunline owners to keep their rigs going than to sell it to someone who will use it for a year and trash it.

I'd sure hate to see this parted out, Joe. A one owner, late production Sunline is something special. Hopefully you can find the perfect buyer for it as is.
