Hello all!

We havent been able to get out camping since the Buttonwood M&G. Been too busy with this money pit called "home" ....but anyways....we are planning a trip to the NJ Shore. The first 4 days we are staying at Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold, NJ. From there we want to go down to Cape May area. There is alot of campgrounds in that area, but we are having a hard time picking one, thus my question....anyone out there have any experiences/recommendations they would be willing to share?

Joe

We have an Outdoorworld membership so we always stay at ODW SeaPines resort. I know that ODW used to have a program where nonmembers could use the CG for a limited time. This resort is a very nice wooded CG close to the Sea Isle City/Wildwood/Cape May area. You way want to call them to see if they still offer this option. I highly reccomend it.
We also have friends that reguraly stay at the Holly Shores CG. I've toured the CG and it looks very nice. I believe it may have a Cape May Courthouse, NJ address. http://www.hollyshores.com/ I just took a look at their site and they rate very highly with trailer life and woodalls.

Hi Joe,

Last year we camped at Lake Laurie Campground in the Cape May area,

We would NOT recommend it.

Sorry that all we have is a negative. Good luck, hope you find a good campground.

PM sunnyseagull, I believe they went to that area following Buttonwood.

Hope this helps.

Hi Hutch I grew up down at the jersey shore , and still go there all the time my dad lives there yet, we like to stay at Ocean view campground , or Big Timberlake, they are pretty much centered between Ocean city and Cape May Ocean view has 1175 sites alot of them are seasonal but they still have alot of transit sites, they have a pool and a swimming lake with paddle boats , a nice store ,mini golf , and tram car to take you threw the campground, the campground is located on rt 9 just outside of sea Isle City which is a cool little town with a small boardwalk , or promenade , Big Timber lake is a little further south on rtr 9 and you turn off of 9 and its sits back about 2 miles off of rt 9 it is just behind odw Sea Pine campground that was mentioned above , the campground is well maintained the sites are level the also have a pool and a swimming lake, and lots of actives , and there is one more campground that I would consider very nice and that is Beach Comber it is futher south on rt 9 more outside of Wild Wood and Cape May I have never stay here but friends have many times , the only allow one dog per site and we have two ,and I also like Ocean city much better then Wild Wood. you may want to check out www.beachcomber.com there is a link to all the regions in NJ and it breaks down all the campground in each reigon, and usally has a link to there individual web sites , if you have any questions about a perticular campground pm me I have been to most or at least driven threw them, how ever I am leaving 8/8/09 for a week at Ocean View but thats not until tomorrow Dan :D

I stayed at Holly Shores CG. and it was nice, beach comber just down the street is also a sister camp ground also to be nice.

Thank you all for the responses!

Sunnyseagull...travel safe!

We booked Holly Shores. Now to get the camper out of storage and blow off the dust. I hope it's still there?

We'll be at Turkey Swamp in sept. so I'll anxiously await your review! I couldn't believe they had a site available. I did have to talk the ranger into it though. He said it only fit a 25 foot trailer, so I told him the box of our trailer is 25 so lots of companies would consider it a 25  , we have no slides and are willing to forgo the awning if we have to. Hope we can get into it when we get there

Hey Tweety,

My wife has family in Freehold, so during a visit last April (2008) we drove thru Turkey Swamp and checked it out. It looked really nice, woodsy, and as I recall the sites were pretty big. A quick story...my wife has wanted to camp in NJ for years so she could see her family. I never wanted to camp there but I agreed to at least go and look at Turkey Swamp, after all its only 5 miles from her aunt. I remember before we even went to check it out I said "I'll never go camping at a place named Turkey Swamp!" I'll be the first to admit when I am wrong. We'll be there at the end of this week. I'll post a review. If you let me know your site number I'll take some pics of and post them for you.

Turkey Swamp park is great. I have tented there before the camper and enjoyed it very much. Very woodsy and lots of elbow room. Small lake for fishing and plenty of trails for hiking.

I think you will enjoy yourself. If I remeber correctly campfires are out at 11:00.

Thanks Joe! We'll be on site E-7. I figured Turkey Swamp is not too far from Bay Head where Steve's grandfather used to live, so we can go visit that town and the beach while we're there.

Hello Tweety,

Here's some pictures of E7.

This is as you pull into the site. All sites are pull through, but run parallel to the main road.

Another of the same view...we were on E10, just across the main campsite road....thats us off on the right.

The next 4 images are of E7.

These next 2 images are of our site (E10).

This place is really nice. Very hard to believe that only about 3 miles away in every direction is all commerical...stores...stores...stores... The sites are very large, you will have plenty of room for your TT, maybe even two of them and room for your TV. Be sure you bring plenty of fresh water hose. Your probably 60 feet or so from the water connection. I had to go buy more hose. The power connection is very close....it's just the water connection that is a ways away, on all sites. Have a safe trip and enjoy!

WOW that looks AWESOME!!! Now I'm really excited to go!!! Thanks so much for the photos, and the tip about the water hose!

Joe

Thanks for posting the pics!!! Seeing Sunlines in action is really neat! And I really like that campground!!

Thanks

John

Looking at site E-7, wouldn't the picnic table and fire ring be on the wrong side of the trailer? Or can you pull into the site from the other direction? Looking at the map for the park, it shows the roads as one way.

Good catch Mike, thank you!

That is true, we were on the right side of the road, but anyone with an RV on the left side did pull in from the other direction so the awning and door opened to the site.

Good to know...we don't usually go the wrong way on a one way but now we will :)

Turkey Swamp is a great setup. Nice playgrounds for the kids too!

Take it nice and slow as you drive through. One of the things you notice is a lot of trees with scars on them. Take the turns wide :p

Turkey Swamp is FANTASTIC !!! The sites are HUGE. You DO have to drive the wrong direction on the one way street depending on which side your site is on, but the ranger actually told me it's OK to do that. The roads are REALLY narrow and winding. I wouldn't want to be towing anything larger than 28' through there, and am not even sure you'd make it if you were over 30'. We were probably the longest trailer there. There were a couple motor homes, and many many popups and tents. Guess I'll post an official review in the mideastern section.
