New Key & Fender Skirts

Hi, we are new to this group. We have had our Sunline since 2012, but we are presently in the process of remodeling it a little....and it is due to get new vinyl flooring and carpet next week! We are so excited about that. We have painted the inside and are updating the covers for the sofa and dinette set. and got rid of the OLD window treatments and opted for a fresh homey feeling with regular semi sheers and colorful contrasting colors. The reason we joined was to find out information on where /how you find replacement parts for this older camper.

My first question is: How do we get another key for this camper? When we bought it second hand, only one door key came with it. Now that it is going to get flooring installed, I think we should have a second key. I have been looking online and see some for sale, but am unsure of getting something I don't know for sure will fit. The one I was looking at says it will take all numbers through a series and our number is in it, and the beginning two letters are the same. Does that mean it will work??? It's a master key.

The other question is how do we know which universal fender skirt will work?
We need to replace both as they got damaged in getting flat tires while driving.

Thanks so much for any help in these matters. The key is of utmost urgency as I need to order it tomorrow to be sure it will arrive before Friday.

I may be able to help with the key and Fender skirts, but we need more information from you to help better, such as the model year and model number of your Sunline. That way, we can give you more specific answers than general big-picture answers.

First is the key. On the newer campers, the entry door units were made of metal frames and fiberglass panels as an entire door unit. Sunline used many Fastec door locksets on these premade door units. The older doors were more wood-based frames for the door itself, and I am not sure of the brand locks they used. The Fastec locksets, most of the time, have the initials of FIC (Fastec Industrial Corp) molded in the part of the lockset, which can be seen on the inside of the door lockset. The FIC initials may be in other places, not only where it shows in that picture.

Here is a pic of one of them.

If you do not have a key code, the Fastec locks sometimes have a sticker inside the lock set with the key code or a number stamped on the outside handle key cylinder.

If your lock is a Fastec (also known as a Wesco Fastec), the company is https://www.wescofastec.com/locks-keys. If you call them with the key code, they can send you new pre-cut keys. While you are talking with them, ask if your lock set is in the recall, they had a recall many years ago, and would send you new lock cylinders with two new keys for the new lock cylinders free if your locks are on the recall.

Some RV dealers sell key blanks for Fastec locks even if they cannot cut their teeth. If you can buy the correct blank to fit your lock, then take your working key and the blanks to an older hardware store or locksmith that can cut keys, and they can cut in the teeth. You may have to find a lock key cutting place with the older machines that trace the teeth rather than the new machines like in Home Depot, etc., which are all automatic and work well with house keys but not on these more unusual camper door keys.

Fender skirts. Again, year and model are needed, as Sunline and fender skirts changed as the years went by. Campers with slides can have longer skirts than non-slide campers, even if the year is the same. The tires are bigger on a slide camper, so they need longer fender skirts.

Here is a place where I have bought new Fender skirts for Sunlines before. They have lots of fender skirts and some Sunline's specific skirts.

They have increased their inventory by at least 10X since I last bought from them a few years ago. My goodness, it has it. Pages 42 and 43 have the Sunline ones. They do not go by year or model but by brand and measurements, as they are an aftermarket molder. Someone sends them a semi-intact fender, and they make a mold and then do a larger run of them. They do sell directly. I have made a direct sale, and they also sell them at other places; I have bought them from Camping World, and Amazon even, as they sell the ICON brand for some items. Shop for price and availability. But, you must know their part number to shop for, so start at the ICON site to find the PN's.

I'll add this about ICON Direct: their quality is very good on everything I bought from them, including AC shrouds, Shower roof skylights, and fender skirts.

I'll also add that if you still have all the pieces of a cracked fender skirt or entry door bezel, I have repaired them and then repainted them as part of a camper restoration effort. If this is a route you would like to go, please let me know, and I'll dig up some more on the Fender skirts I have repaired.

I appreciate your response. It may be spring until we get back into it to continue working on our updates. We did buy a set of keys. The one key works, but the other one does not. Not sure why, but I will jot down your info about the keys asap.
Thanks, too, for the info about the skirts. I will get that info to you in a few months. We are getting into our colder season, and I really do not like going out in the cold garage to look for anything. HA! I appreciate all you wrote....and will share it with my husband at another time.

On the two keys, one works, and one does not; I don't know if you had two new keys cut to match the same lock code. If they were to be cut to the same lock code, then yes, they should have worked. If a local place cuts them, you may have to return to them, and they run the key through the cutter again. This happens now and then; any slight burr on the key that does not get cut off, and the key will not work.

As FYI, on most Sunlines with two entry doors, the two doors have different key codes and need two different keys. I'm not sure why they did it that way, but they did.

When things warm up and you have time to return to the fenders, let us know; we are glad to help.

Hi Linda, and welcome!

It looks like you have a 2006 T-267SR, or is it by chance a 276SR?

If you have a 276SR (which replaced the 267 in 2006), it has the Stow-n-go large storage door in the lower bunk area. Like John said, whether two regular entry doors or one entry door and stow-n-go, Sunline doors generally had different keys. In rare cases you may get two doors of the same key number installed at the factory, but it's only by chance. So if the key you ordered (plus your original) only works in the main door and not the Stow-n-go, you'll need to take the handle apart to see that key code sticker. The key codes are usually written in the owner's manual binder on a 2006 trailer as well, if you still have that.

Note that the door key(s) will not work for the smaller baggage doors or hatch doors either. That's a separate universal key, CH751. You can buy those online or at pretty much any RV store, they're very generic.

Also a couple things about fender skirts. If yours is a 2006 and has the gold skirts, I believe those were only available in 66" and 68" lengths. Yours being a slide trailer likely has the 68". Also when replacing your fender skirts, they will require installing with butyl tape behind them, to ensure water doesn't enter into the trailer around the screws. There are sources to buy it online, but usually this is a very affordable item at a local RV dealer or Camping World. Ask for a 25' roll of butyl tape, not putty tape. Run it along the inside of each fender skirt along the top. I haven't had one of your style skirts off to know how they taped it, but use the old one as a reference of where you need to tape. Don't reuse the old tape that will be very dried out and dirty. I also recommend cleaning the surface before installing the new one as well.

When removing the old fender skirt, some models with this style skirt I know have a metal bar that braces the middle part that drops down, so check underneath first to see if you need to remove a screw from that bracket. It helps to keep the skirt from flapping in the wind on the road, which could lead to it cracking and breaking.
