need a cabinet door

Does anyone know what happened to the cabinetmaker who made doors for Sunline? We'd like to have a door on the TV cabinet, and it's an odd size, so going to Lowes's or Home Depot isn't an option. Or any other suggestions as to where to get a custom sized door at a reasonable cost. I found a place in Kentucky on ebay, but they only do unfinished doors, so that we'd have to match the stain - which is difficult.

Hey Tweety,
I just put a door in the 2363 cabinet over the sink. That was a fixed panel were the clock was placed. Hardware was not a problem but I am having a hard time to find the "right" door. HD and Lowes were worthless and to custom order it was over $125. I have an old antique door in place now that matches in color, but I am on the look out for a better match. I plan to keep a look out at garage sales for some cabinetry the right color. My thought is if I don't come across something, I will atempt to build my own this winter. I have a bunch of good oak on hand. Let me know how you make out.
I better go and get the fridge packed or i will never get out of here!

Hi Pam,

We had a custom door made by Sunline (i.e., they had their sub-contractor make it) for the bathroom cabinet. I check all my paper work and the sub-contractor was never named and I never asked who it was.
Anyway, the custom door we had made was ~16"x15" and it cost us $75.

So $38 + shipping sounds like a good price for a 17x17 door.
Matching stain should be that bad. Take a finished door from Tweety to a good paint shop and have them match the stain, then test it on the back of the unfinished door. (or ask the place in Kentucky if they can include a scrap piece of wood to test stain on).

On the stain, do what I did.

Take a draw or door front that Sunline stained with you.

Take a piece of unfinished wood that the new door is made from. Ask your Kentucky guys for a scrap piece that the door is made from.

Head to your local Sherwin Williams paint store. They mix you a can that exactly matches. I’m making some new doors on ours and I found this route the perfect match. I tried and tried in the Home depot/Lowes deal and wasted money. Have 2 cans of stuff I’ll never use other then about 3 brush strokes of. :x But I have a quart of perfect match that will last me a good long time.

Get the oil based stain. I tried the water based and not happy.

Thanks for all the info. We have decided to get 2 cabinet doors from Kentucky - one for the TV cabinet, and one for the space over the sink/stove where the clock now hangs. I sounds like Sherwin Williams will be the source for the stain

We ended up ordering 2 doors from Kentucky. Stole an idea from MarkersMark and got one for the clock spot in addition to the one for the TV cabinet. Our total bill was $91 with shipping. Doors arrived 1 week after ordering and are beautiful. Dropped off the necessary items at Shirwin Williams today for stain matching. The manager there tells me to use an oil base stain, but a water base poly because the water base poly avoids the yellow tinge that oil base poly adds to the finished door.
Will post pics upon completion.

I will have to check my woodworking catologs at home to see if they have some hardware for that. I had my door for the clock area just open to the left so no "plunger thingies" were needed.

Really want to see the door pic’s. It might just be cheaper for me to buy then make and I need one. I’m staining tonight and using the water poly over the top as well on another project. Sounds like 2 Sherwin Williams paint stores states apart gives out the same info. Have to compare the stain codes on the can you get.

Thanks for the sources for the plunger thingies. My first stop will be Stoltzfus. The doors are coming along nicely. The jury is sitll out on if the stain is dark enough because this hard maple really doesn't suck much in. But here's the formula for 32 oz. interior wood classics oil stain
N1 - raw umber - 5
Y3 - deep gold - 1
R4 - new red - 1
B1 - black - 2
R2 - maroon - 1
quart Natural

The formula is not too bad, but we both agree that it needs a little more red or maroon in it. It's a little light overall, and not quite pink enough. FYI John B...the water based poly doesn't darken up the stain much at all, and imparts NO yellowish tint either, so your color needs to basically be right on before applying the poly.

Here is my can of stain. I’ll let you know over the weekend how good a match it is. I’m using this on pine with the water based Polycrylic from Minwax. Have a shelf in the kitchen I added with it on it. In the house basement it look good but have to get it out in the camper during the daylight to tell.

And the more I look around in the camper, the more shades I see are in there. Depending on the cut and natural luster of the maple there are many shades.

The make up of our 2 stains is different. I’m not enough of a stain wizard to tell what the differences are other then the numbers are different. And again mine was matched on white pine using a Maple draw from what Sunline did. The guy at the store wanted a scrape piece of wood bad that I was going to use or he would not mix it. He says the wood can drastically change the color. But again these guys do this for a living so drastic to them may not be so bad for me.

We are very pleased with the cabinet door project. You'll see that the doors we ordered have a bevel on the outside edge as opposed to being just flat. Our choices were an all flat door, like we have under the sink, or the one we chose. We thought the one we chose was closer to the original upper cabinet doors. The stain was a little off still after we stained and polyed it, so Steve added a bit of Minwax rosewood water based stain to the last 2 layers of the water based poly, and that brought the color around to be alot closer to the Sunline color. As usual my photography stinks, but I don't think a casual observer would notice that the 2 new doors are not authentic. Now Jon (aka Sunlinefan)...will definitely notice

The difference in the color that you see from one photo to the other is just that the sun was shining in the east side of the trailer pretty brightly this morning when I took the pics.
