Has anyone noticed the "weird" new members? Their profiles are outrageous! I hope we don't get hit with a lot of spam!

I've noticed some of that too. I'm glad that I don't know anything about these members this time! I think Sarah needs to come up with some sort of membership guidelines to filter out the spam. Since she has access to the E-mail addresses, maybe she should E-mail each member who have zero total posts. I don't want to discourage membership, but I think the guidelines for joining are too loose to have so many spam members. I looked at the other forum that Steve Collins mentioned and there were very few members on there that had never posted. I think eliminating the spam members would make our little group feel closer together.

I agree, especially with some of the locations these folks say they are from. Sorry, but no way do they have a Sunline. Maybe need to have a timeframe for posting, and if you dont post you get an e-mail saying you'll be deleted?

Kitty,

I like the idea about having a timeframe. My initial idea was making some requirement that they list the year and model of their Sunline (If they have one), or list the approx. year and length/weight of a Sunline they are looking for. If they list something that's not an actual Sunline model or year, then their application for membership could either be held up or rejected. If Sarah is unsure if the model exists, she could confer with any/all of the moderators for clarification. Since this would be more involved, I think your idea would be easier to set up. Even if these new guidelines are put in place, your idea could work for the existing members.

Hey I didn't want to start a problem here......but when I look at a profile and interest are SEX or Viagra or some other illegal drug I really wonder!

I like Kitty's idea - but that would entail someone sending an e-mail to them to at least let them know they have been approved.

I vouched for Medbill a month ago - he has posted some, but noting in a week or two - he was interested in buying a Sunline....just didn't know if he could pull it with his truck....

Now bugbite - over on RV forum is interested in a Sunline, but not sure if he wants to buy a TT with a defunk manufacturer....

But if there are rules about posting within a certain time frame - anyone who is really interested will/should go into "Intoduce Yourself" amd post something there!

Like I said I didn't want to cause trouble....just an observation!

Having an approval process will not stop people from signing up. I think going through and eliminating a lot of these is a good idea, but that requires someone to actuatly go through and manually erase folks!

I just went through and counted the members who have posted and there are a little over 4 pages (out of 21) of members who have posted something at least once. Also, IMO there are only four members of the most recent 108 (1008 members at time of this post) that even have the slightest potential of posting something.

I wonder how many of these accounts actually get activated? That could be another thing, if the account isn't activated within a week from when the E-mail response is sent out, the name automatically gets deleted.

Hi Everyone -

Unfortunately, we do get lots of people who sign up for membership that are spammers. I manually review each and every new member before approving them, though, so there is little risk that they will be able to post to the forums. (I won't give away the details of my screening process here, for obvious reasons.)

I have not taken the time to remove the unapproved people who sign up, but that is something I will look into. I could always do this manually, but it would be nice if there were some automated process that I am not aware of.

Thanks!
Sarah

UPDATE

With some help from our wonderful web developer, the current SPAM registrations have been removed and we've added an authorization code to the registration form. Hopefully this will help, but I know it will continue to be a constant battle...

That's great - you do such a wonderful job! :D

Thanks Sarah for all the time and effort you put in to maintaining this site.

Man, After reading this post, I better start posting more Questions and Pictures or I might be considered a Spammer :D

I'm not sure if anyone realizes how much work a website like this is, and Sarah is doing it all for free!! If you havent donated to the site, it might a good idea to send a little "$Thank You$" to our Queen Sarah.

I know the Magazine Website that I run with a few other partners is a full time job for a few web-gurus and it costs a pretty penny to maintain.

Thank You Sarah, for giving us all a place to vent and learn new things.

The Spammers will weed themselves out sooner or later.

Pat
