Lightning Crashes

Hey everyone, its been awhile since we've gotten a strong enough connection to post anything or browse the forum, but I thought I'd share a cool shot I snapped the other day.

We were returning from a hike in the Hellroaring River Trail in Yellowstone while a storm was approaching. Just as we reached the trail head, I snapped this lightning bolt zigzagg across the sky

I have another shot with a bolt hitting right behind the camper, but I'm embarrased because its blurry. It was one of those ones where you hear it and see it at the same time and I was jumping off the ground it scared me so bad, so the shot isnt all that great, but you can still see the lightning bolt in it...LOL

For some reason Cindy was yelling out the door for me to come grab the Umbrella with the metal handle? :shock:

Very nice shot of the lightening. Be honest.............luck or skill to catch a bolt like that??!! I usually fill my card and still miss every chance to get lightening

Hey Marshall, I dont think she was looking out for the equipment...LOL

I've figured out a better way to get lucky. I pre-focus for the scene, then set the camera to manual focus and just hold it against my chest aiming towards the scene with my finger on the shutter.

You can usually see a slight flicker in the sky before it crashes out of the clouds, and once I see the flicker I start hitting the shutter button.

3 out of 10 times I might get the shot. Most of the time, I just delete a ton of the exact same images, but I've been pretty lucky with the last two storms that have passed over.

I cant remember if I posted this on here already, but if I did, it's still cool to look at. Look just to the right of the telephone pole and you can see the lightning

Hey Norm, as long as you're in one of the areas, dare I say towns, that has an Inn, you can usually pick up some service. Granted, even with our Wilson Amplifier, it's dial-up speed, but we can get online enough to upload some images and download emails

Right now we're just outside the park in Gardnier, which has some good service which is why I'm making all my phone calls and answering too many emails...LOL

Thanks for the tip. Beautiful pitures. Sue told me I could start looking for my camera and get it this fall. I'm looking at the Nikon D90 or the new D5000. I'm still liking the D90!! Sue has the D60. It's a fine camera but I would like a little more.

In reality, check out the Fred Miranda Buy Sell Forums and you can usually find some amazing deals on used stuff.

We dont shoot Nikon, but my daughters boyfriend shoots on the Dark Side and I was looking for some stuff for him on there, and comparing it to new prices, we were both amazed at how much he was going to save.

I've bought a ton of stuff off of there, and never once had any issues with it not working or not being 100% what they claimed it was going to be.

Good luck with your photography and arent our coaches just a means to get us out there taking more pictures
