Kitchen slide pantry! Kitchen broom? Any hints?

Well as many of you may have read on another thread....DH & I are trading in our 06 T1950 for an 07 T2499 - and now that we know we are not crazy - just a little nuts (thanks for the support to keep us out of the looney bin) I need to know about the kitchen slide pantry in the models that have them.

How do they hold up? Can you put canned goods on the shelves without any problems......now I guess I'm going to have to remember to "lock it in place" before we go anywhere....just one more thing for this feeble mind to remember. DH is saying no canned good on the shelves, I thought it was made fairly "strong" and the welds looked good....he does listen to what you all say, even though he is not the computer person to get on the forum.

Well what say you all experienced slide pantry owners!

OK on the T1950 - we mounted a slip/attachment to the side of the bed and clip the broom into it....where do you 2499 owners keep your broom? Any other helpful hints about where to put things?

What about the stove being so close to the couch - should I BUY (yuke I hate that word) or construct (I like that word) a "barrier" for over between the couch and stove? If you vote construct - any hints?

We are going out now to start the unloading process, I told Leo that we would load the new one next weekend......well he reminded me that I will be away for the week that he brings home the new coach....he isn't too happy right now but he will be on our first trip out! No more climbing over me to get to bed (yea for me).

Ok give me your thoughts - hints and suggestions......

oh and all you "manley men" he is already talking about the "nice looking dully truck" sitting on the dealers lot and you know "It don't hurt to ask"!

Hi, we never have had a problem storing cans in the pantry. when we take our long trips, the pantry is fully loaded. I keep cans on the lower shelves and always remember to slide the lock bolt in place. I don't use a broom for cleaning the interior, I use a 1000 watt shark vacuum, it does a great job and stores easily. so far the sofa being next to the stove has not been a problem. we are very careful when using the stove. no indoor frying ,however accidents happen that is why I'm going to have a piece of plate glass cut and install as protactive barrier. good luck with your new trailer.

We fill up the pantry in our Weekend Warrior full of cans, bottles, and everything else heavy under the sun and it works fine. Well, it works great considering it's not built by Sunline. If your DH is that worried about cans, etc, tell him that one not built by Sunline holds all kinds of stuff and gets bounced, tipped side to side, and almost rolled 360 degrees and it still holds. All that while basically taking it over 5 miles of ORV trails.

This is our second Sunline to have the pull-out pantry and it works great! We also have the T-2499 and I store all my canned and dry goods in the pull-out pantry. I just put the heavier items on the lower shelves. The shelves are adjustable, so you can put them at the height that works best for you.

I store my regular sized broom in the outside storage under the bed until we set up camp. Then I have it sitting right by the door so that I can reach it easily. I bought a small wisk broom and dustpan at the Dollar Tree for a buck that I store in the pantry under the bottom shelf.

I slid my broom into the front cross through compartment. I kept the weight to under 100# by only putting lightweight items like chairs, plastic end tables, a rolled up rug, a hibachi and my tow mirrors. In the slide out pantry, I used hooks mounted with the 3M Command system to hang some hotpads on the upper right wall. Plenty of room and easy to get to.

Here is what we do on the areas you asked.

First the panty. After we bought ours, we called Sunline and bought 2 spare baskets to have a few extra. That panty is the best….

I’ll walk you thru this with pic’s. You can get more from it maybe.

First off we had an issue with the door. The hinges when mounted in such a way as the door would always close. It would not stay open, and we where dragging it pulling open the panty. I do not know if that was suppose to be a feature or not. But I got rid of it. I took the door off, re-bent the hinges back to normal so now the door swings wide open past 90 degree and stays put.

Maybe some other T2499 owners can chime in here if theirs had that bent hinge feature as well. Maybe it was just ours. This pic is after I fixed it.

And then there is a story to the lock.

Yup, you guessed it, we forgot to latch it "once" and sure enough out it flew on the way home. It put a nice dent in the door on the inside, but not much other damage.

That then prompted this list nice and handy on the iside of the door that DW now always checks before we pull out.

Now to the loading. We have a mix of cans and other stuff. I would not 100% load one of these full with cans. On ours we have had many of them break open at the top of the weld. Almost right from the get go. Some even on the 2nd trip out. And we did not have that much weight in them. So I added a plastic tie wrap on every corner to help that joint out. Even if it was not broke. Since the tie wraps where added we have not had a problem in 2 years.

The broom. I have a straw broom out side in the side peg board closet. That is the “outside” broom. Use it on dirty stuff like leaves, rugs, awnings. DW will not let it in the camper.

Inside we have one we store in the bath room. Bought a heavy stick on hook and I trimmed it down to work. We also added a Velcro strap in the middle. It might work without the strap, never tried it yet. It helps keep it out of the door.

We also have a small whisk broom and a small dirt devil vac for the rugs. So we have no issue with sweeping, one for each hand...

Now the cooking inside. I was/am concerned about the couch next to the stove. There will be no large grease frying inside, period. Regardless of the couch. This I researched out on fire safety when we bought the TT. We do most all cooking outside anyways. I have an outside kitchen. Actually building some more of it this weekend. We came from a PU so we where use to it. Heck where camping…. in style anyway and with the kitchen sink.

When we winter camp in real bad weather, we do use the stove. But it is limited to boiling/heating up in a closed pot or very low to non spatter pan frying. Pan cakes are OK and even eggs. But no sausage or bacon. Plus we do not want the smells to linger from frying. The micro wave can do them with a paper towel and then no fire issues. Even if I do eggs, it is on the burner by the sink away from the couch.

I was going to make a wood/plastic shield that would hang out horizontally 4 to 6 inches and then go vertical up to the cabinet. It would easily hook on and only need it when we use the stove. However since we do so little cooking inside I have not made it to that yet in the 3 seasons camping with it. I put all the creative energy into the outside kitchen i'm finishing up. Actually Camco makes plastic splash shield that would almost fit. Have to search there web site.

Well that’s what we do.

Oh, don’t worry where you put stuff in the camper. Come 2 years from now you will have rearranged it at least 3 times anyway.

Thanks for all the info everyone! If you have any other tricks please let me know.......I'll be anxious to take her out on a maiden voyage.....we might just go to Nick's Lake - gee it is about 10 minutes or 2 miles away!
Figure once DH puts things away...I'll need a trip close to home to try things out!

Last August, we took the toy hauler out for a "break-in" trip because we wanted to work out any kinks before using it for a whole week. We, too, chose a local state park (about 1/2 hour away) so we could be close, if something happened. Well, we arrived to electric only sites! We hadn't stayed there before, so we figured it would be like most MI state parks and have water/electric. We filled the tank up with a water hose from the dump station, hoping this would be the only issue. Well, we later discovered that the converter had a fuse blown, and when did we find it, once it got dark! We had no power! I hope you have a relaxing, stress free trial trip.

Kathy .... We load the heavier stuff, like canned goods, on the lower shelves of the pantry and after traveling over most of the US have never had a problem.
We have a checklist by the door that reminds us to "CHECK THE DOORS AND LATCHES". We also have a little bright red sign that hangs on the tv antenna crank when the thing is in the up position.

Our little lobby broom is secured behind the toilet using two stick-on hooks with a rubber band stretched across. We also have a sweet little Shark for the carpet jobs.

I made a glass partition about 6" high that is attached to the counter beside the stove to keep any slashes away from the sofa.

When we were in General RV looking at different models, Wade, the General Manager opened up the pantry and pulled out the infamous shelf. As he was saying "We call this the WOW shelf" My wife and I both said together "WOW" and then we all laughed.

We keep our shelf loaded to the hilt with canned goods, boxes of food and all sorts of goodies. It's traveled this way for 4 months now and over 8000 miles loaded down. Only once have we forgot to latch it and drove for a few hours with it banging away. When we stopped, there were only a few things that had fallen out, but everything worked fine. Now we both remind each other and double check each other before we leave.

When I took this picture, my wife wanted me to mention that the shelves are almost bare compared to her normally stocking them full. She loves to cook and if you ever tasted her food, you'd agree with me that she's good at it.

Well I'm glad to hear no major problems with the pantry....I will have wire ties put on, just to have DH "feel" more secure about overloading the shelves!

I can't wait to get her home Saturday (5/5)....however I won't be home that next week...DH said he'll have everything in place so when I come home (5/13) we'll be ready for a trip....yea right!

I'm sure I'll re-arrange things to suit me - as inside is MY domain, outside is his!

Thanks for all the hints.....once we get into camping in the 2499 - I'll post what changes/mods we've made!

Your 2007 T2499 Panty is made different than my 2004 T2499.

If you look, your 2007 is made to hang the basket by the center making it more balanced.

My, 2004, is made to have the basket cantilevered over all support from 1 side and holds the weight only from one side. Which adds a lot more stress on the wire welds.

I like your design better.

Kathy, your 2007, which way is it built?

H'mmmm Looks like they did a fix somewhere after 2004 models and using in 2006's.

Little by little 'm learning the changes in the T2499 history. In 2005 they did a fair number of changes. Frame, over all camper height, rubber ride axles, longer awning, wider front door, more interior height, front widow gone.

In 2007 the TV cabinet is now different and Cherry is now available.

Another piece to the puzzle.

Morning John,

The top of the entertainment center was deleted in the '06 model (I had to add the top in as a "option", the rubber ride suspension was an option I got on my '06. Did they add these things to the '07? Don't know about the front door size, as I don't have one. I also don't have a front window. Don't know "IF" my heights are the same, nor about the awning size other than I upgraded to the A&E 8500 rather than the standard "sunsetter" from A & E. I forgot to look at my pantry baskets, will do that maybe today, "IF" I go back out to work on the WH again.

Can anyone give me the inside measurements of the "shirt" closet in the bedroom on an 07 T2499?

DH made shelves for our 1950 and they are removable (frame and all) and if they fit - we'll pull them and use if not they stay with the 1950.

Think we have it sold privately....we'll know for sure tonight!

Leo and Kathy,

I have a 2006. I measured inside the frame, at the bottom of the door, 25 1/2 inches deep- 14 inches wide and 44 inches ceiling to floor. Top of the door area goes to 21 inches deep and the rest the same.

Remember, the leaf for the table is in the left cabinet, strapped to the wall. Amy and I plan to go with the plastic style drawers as talked about in another post on the right side and use the left cabinet for hanging items. From your photos, I see Leo is pretty handy. Lucky you. I'm so inept that I even type with one finger. You can't mash a finger with a keyboard like you can with a hammer!

Congrats on the new coach. Sounds like you two go camping alot. We are limited in time due to us working opposite shifts. But we have set dates for three weekends and a two weeker up to the Thousand Islands in September.

BoBo - you only think Leo is "experience" he needs me to prod him along! Just kidding of course.

We are going to 1000 Island in August, DD/SIL(X2) & grandsons(x3) will be joining us in August.....where are you guys staying? We are at Grass Point - just ove that place....easy access, quite and not "PACKED IN" like some of the other CG's.

I too like the idea of the self contained drawers - but since we alreay have the frame and shelves made, if we could use them it is a quite simple switch!

AH! I was wondering where they put the kitchen table extender!
