Certain Reese 54970 and Pro Series 63970 shanks have been found defective by Cequent Group (parent company of Reese) and have been recalled.

Serial numbers affected are TD100435, TD100451, TD100456, TD100511 or TD100617.

The shanks were sold both in a kit and individually, so you could be affected if you got a new shank for your existing hitch.

Jon

Thanks for posting. That 54970 is a very common shank. I have an older one from 2004 in the shed. I'll look tonight if a lot number even exists on it. I also happened to see the country of origin in the kit page in the recall. Not good.

That shank was also "up-rated" a few years ago from 1,200# to 1,500# with no apparent outside looks. Do not know if they actually changed the way the shank was made or the test they used to test it with. Or if it was built heavier and the sticker de-rated it since until a few years ago Rees never offered anything above 1,200”# WD bars. So why offer a 1,500# shank.

Thanks

John

John, This note is on the recall notice Jon posted, you may be ok with a 2004 unit.

If you purchased one of these kits prior to August 1, 2010, you are not affected by this recall. However, if you purchased your kit on or after August 1, 2010, please review this notice carefully.
