Location
Northville NY in the Adirondacks
Hutch and I were talking about some other things, and the topic of the Meet & Greet in PA came up.

We'd love to go, but our schedule is already pretty tight for the entire summer. Any free weekends we have in the summer months are committed to taking the grandkids out on short camping trips.

I mentioned that we always go up to Nick's Lake SP outside of Old Forge, NY in the Adirondacks in the fall just before Columbus Day, and maybe we ought to think about making that a Meet & Greet. The weekend would be October 5, 6, & 7 this year.

Hutch liked the idea and the location, so I am tossing it out for consideration to everyone. Old Forge is a little over 3 hours from Rochester and Albany, and most of the rest of the northeast US can get there pretty easily.

(Poppy and Nana, are you listening? :) )

Nick's Lake SP's camping area is divided into loops with each loop having 20 to 30 sites. At that time of year, reservations are not required to get a great site, and some of the loops, while open, have hardly anyone in them. We could easily have a dozen units or more all in one loop and be pretty much all by ourselves.

Old Forge is just a couple of miles away, and there's lots to see and do there. Plenty of great shops and restaurants, if that's your interest. The "leaf peeping" is just grand, and there are some great drives to be had right in the area.

Also, the Adirondack Scenic Railroad has several excursions each day from Thendara Station (just a mile or two west of Old Forge); that might be a great group outing on Saturday.

If there is enough interest, I am sure that the park manager can give us a hand with picking a loop and a group of sites in advance.

There you have it. Now, who's up for this?

OK Steve & Hutch - yes we are listening and we are definately in on this one!!!!!! However I don't know if we can make that 2 mile drive - it might be too tough to do for a weekend

That time of year is really nice up here - during the week it is very quite, but on a weekend most "activities & shops" are open.....beside the railroad, we have the boat tour, canoeing, hiking and just sitting around meeting and talking! Sounds like a great weekend....I could even make it to work on Saturday and drive back up before anyone even knows I'm missing - I work in one of the local motels (just for the summer months) Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday & Saturday mornings! This one will be easier for us to make, since getting away in August (busy time) is a little harder to ask for time off!

Just remember one thing - it can get mighty cold up here that time of the year! It's even snowed up here on Columbus Day weekend!

I'll keep checking for details!

Kathy

Well, you've certainly got my interest. We usually go to Fish Creek on that weekend for a final round of paddling but we've paddled Nick's and the Moose River before and had a good time there. Haven't been to Nick's in about 3 years so it would be a pleasant change, and an opportunity to meet some of you folks. I'd love to go to the M & G in Pa but won't be able to make it this year due to time constraints. Steve, keep us informed, I think you'll find quite a few folks interested. (Harvey?) OH, and I'll be looking for you at FCP in June. We're at Rollins every year for our anniversary at that time.

Having looked at the on line reservation sight, it does not show if there is electric or water available at each sight. Can anyone tell me if these are available at Nick's Lake Campground? We need at least electric to run a medical device.

Thanx,

Bobo

Sorry Bobo, there are no hookups there. Water faucets are spaced every few sites and we bring a small generator and charger to keep the batteries charged. There are limited generator hours, usually 9-11 AM and 4-7 PM. One alternative for you is to hook a small invertor to a spare battery for AC power. I use that method for a friend with sleep apnea for his CPAP machine at night. Battery lasts about 8 hours before needing recharging. 500 W invertor is about $30 at Sam's Club. It might work for you.

Mike,

We'll be at FCP Site 147 from June 11th until the 20th. Stop by and I'll show you my collection of FCP postcards; I have 86 of them now going all the way back to the mid-1920's.

Thanks for the encouragement on a M&G in the 'Dacks. Looks like we'll have a good turnout.

So who all is planning on going? An particular loop you are staying at? Let me know - I know the only way to make a reservation is thru Reserve America....I'll get more info when I get to work on Tuesday (work part time at the info center here in Old Forge) - I'll try to get a brochure with the info and post it here.....that will be a challenge for me!

I just re-checked the map and the PA outing is just too far to travel with the price of gas!

We also cancelled our outing in September too - 700 miles @ 9 mpg x 3.25 = $250+, just for the weekend....NOT going to happen!

Gee just when you get the time, you don't have the money! Guess that is just life!

We're planning on it as of now.

E loop always fills up early with reservations in the fall, and probably D loop as well. That leaves C, B, and A. I think that C might be good as it would pretty much assure us of being able to group together, and would leave plenty of nearby sites available for any last minute attendees, even without reservations.

Now watch! There will be some major event that weekend, and none of us will get sites even remotely close to each other.... :)

Steve,

I just checked Reserve America for that weekend and E loop is already full. C loop has 4 of the available 18 sites booked. I didn't realize that they were taking reservations that time of year, so if we start booking sites now we can all get in the same loop. C loop works for me. If everyone interested is agreeable I'm ready to reserve a site.

Mike and Steve,

A trip to Old Forge would be great in October. I wonder how many campers will be there looking at the fall foliage? We camped at Westcott Beach over the holiday weekend and while I was walking the dog I watched as a Sunline pulled past the check in gate. After following it around the park they finally backed into the site next to ours. They purchased the camper last fall put it into storage, this was there first trip out. It was a 2002 T-2753 in great shape. It was fun to campare and anwser the questions. Keep us up to speed on Meet and Greet in the Adirondacks.

Well I just got on line with Reserve America and I cannot make a reservation at Nick's Lake - everything is showing as being booked...I'm going to call in the morning and try to find out what is going on.

Kathy,

I would try again, I just got on and it show Loop C mostly available.

I just tried again, I put an arrival date of October 12, 2007 and there are no sites available - it looks like the last date for a reservation is October 7th.....even went to Grass Point & Verona and no luck there either with an October 12th arrival date.....is it possible that they will all close down after the 7th?

Has anyone made a reservation yet? :?:

Columbus Day is early this year; it is October 8th. Nick's Lake, and most of the other ADK State Park Campgrounds close that day.

Fish Creek is one of the few that stays open longer, until the end of October, I think.

That's why we were talking the 5th, 6th, and 7th of October for this.

DUH! What was I thinking? I wrote it on my calendar and still looked for Oct 12 - 13 & 14!

Anyway - has anyone made reservations? Loop c - which sites?

OK I feel real stupid! I still cannot make a reservation, unless the Reserve America site is down!

Kathy,

I'm guessing the Reserve America site for Nick’s Lake is down. I just checked and it’s not reporting anything from Aug – Oct. I would try checking again later.

OK - Leo and I are booked for October 5 - 6- 7 Loop C Site 45 - had to call Reserve America at 800-456-2267 to make the reservation as on-line is down.....sure hope everyone else makes reservations, we sure do want to meet you all!
