Diesel Fuel Locations

We have the Pilot/Flying J RV card (just got it the end of last year camping season) and he did say to watch the prices at surrounding stations, as it averaged out to be 1 cent more even with the discount!!!!! It sure sounded good that Pilot/Flying J is giving you a 6 cent discount but be aware!!!!! He also said most places you could only get 100.00 of fuel then the pump would shut off!

I've owned diesel vehicles for 10 years now, and only recently started reading a lot about Diesel fuel. It seems that different brand stations sell fuel with different levels of cetane. This has an impact on fuel economy (higher is better). Almost universally, truck stops (including my beloved Flying J) have some of the lowest cetane numbers out there.

Topping the list is Shell and BP, so that's where I get my diesel now. I will say that this helps explain some fuel economy variations that I've experienced in the past, but could never explain. Sometimes a tank would only get 10mpg average, and the next tank would average 11.5... with all other factors being materially the same.

Glad someone else mentioned this! We noticed that as well with buying our diesel and gas ( for our car) our MPG varies from one place to the next. If we have to, we fill up at Flying J, but we usually stick with Shell.

As for the RV discount card, we heard people raving about it. I just couldn't see why. I thought it was just a discount card, not a line of credit card. I understand as long as you pay off the balance every month you are good, but what happens if you can't? HUGE interest charges? I believe in paying cash for diesel/gas, cause if your using a CCard your already paying more per gal anyways. Why not buy the good gas/diesel from Shell/BP and in the long run you end up saving money, time and frustrations.

With the FJ card I have anyway, it's just a discount card. It has to be swiped first at the beginning of the transaction, and then some form of payment has to follow.

I don't recall the current rules, but at one time they had levels of discounts to achieve. It was like after you spent $1000, they'd increase the discount level a few cents/gallon. I think there was also a way to accumulate points with store purchases as well.

I agree about sticking with the smaller stations. The one Flying J I visit somewhat regularly (Jeff, in Saginaw) has messed with the limits all the time, and I think they had a $75 at one point before enough people complained. Between that and the card readers not working well and unhelpful staff, I'm not so thrilled about going there now.

While I don't know for sure, I haven't researched it, I think the fear of smaller stations having dirty fuel is more a thing of the past now that there's the ULSD requirements. I certainly don't hear of fuel problems like that like I did about ten years ago with the launch of the 6.0 PSD.

Our Flying J card is not a line of credit /!credit card! It is just a discount card and we get 6 cents off per gallon we can either pay cash or charge it, we charge with no penalty and we do pay off the cc every month.....but that is just us!

But like Leo said - watch the pricing!!!!!!
