Hi Everyone,

We were planning an overnight camping stop at the eastern end of PA off I-80. We are heading in (west) from NJ and the time of the year will be the first week of April. (next week)

Hickory Run State Park in PA near White Haven campground does not open until April 13 and Promised Land has limited sites in the Pickerel Point CG before the 13th when the main CG opens. So these are not really options.

I found the Delaware Water Gap /Pocono Mountain KOA is open year round with winter camping and it is close to the NJ/PA line off I-80.

Has anyone stayed there before? We will only be their one night and we ideally want at least 20 amp 120 AC power.

Anything special to know about the campground, good or bad?

Or do you have any other camping options not far from I-80 near that area? Again need 120 power.

I found Jenny Jump State Forest in NJ is open April 1st for camping by the web but it looked like a quite a hike to the CG with a camper to get back to the camping area. Ideally a semi quick on and off I 80 is what we are looking for. Going in late and coming out early.

Thanks

John

April camping is tough to find in PA! We used KOAs twice on our way home from the west, and once getting down to Florida. All 3 times they were great - easy access, and good facilities. We feel like a campground has to have a minimum standard to be a KOA so there are no surprises. Sometimes they're a little more expensive, but sometimes not. The KOA Richmond North was only $22/night and was the nicest private park ever.

Thanks Pam. Will see how this comes out and report back.

In another week it seems many of the PA state parks open up for camping. Ohio has many parks with campgrounds open all year round. We are spoiled with them.

John...neither of the two state parks you have mentioned are close to rt 80 for an overnight. Promised Land is off 84. The KOA would be your best bet but I am not familiar with it..

I've been to the KOA but haven't camped there. There are a few nice sites and some not so nice sites. But if you're only staying for a night, it should work for you. It's only a few miles off of RT80. They won't have the water turned on yet, but they have a heated bath house and I think you can fill the water tank and use the dump station at the office.

Thanks Janalee, I knew Promised Land is off I-84 as we camp their on the way to NY once a year for the about last 7 years now. It was a SP I knew potentially going in at night that I could get too off I 80, just not quick.

Mike, thanks. At this point we are going to go with the KOA. I will call tomorrow and make a reservation and get the rest of the details.

I'll report back on how this went so we have some info on it here on SOC.

Thanks

John

Mike, your new Avatar, is that the new camper at the pull throughs at Promised Land? That site looks familiar.

I thought so. We have been going just about every year since you gave us that tip, well a long time ago.

Here is a Sunline on PT8. Those trees are pretty familiar

Hi,

Not exactly understanding your question. If your camper has a tank under the toilet, (called the black tank) then that tank as long as there are no leaks, will hold the waste from the toilet to later be dumped at the campground dump station. Also there needs to be what we call "starter water" in the bottom of the tank before using the toilet. You add enough water to the tank down the toilet to create about 1/4" of standing water in the bottom of the tank so solids and paper will not stick to the tank when flushed and can create a build up problem.

Hope this helps.

John
