Ceiling Spots

Morning,

Have found some great information on this site and would like to ask a question to see if anyone has any insight on this issue. I purchased a 2005 Sunline 267SR in the Fall 2006 in brand new condition. We love it!

However, I have noticed a few tiny spots in the ceiling that seem to have a yellowish tinge to them. If I look closely, it appears as though there might be a "micro" hole in the white ceiling fabric where perhpaps it was "touched up" with a clear sealant that has yellowed a bit. You really have to look to see it. I was even wondering if it was teeny-tiny holes in the ceiling fabric where the wood stain may have bled or seeped through? Or maybe the "glue" that's on he backing of the ceiling material? I'd appreciate any ideas/thoughts.

Hi Eric,

At first, your problem sounded like water damage, which it still may be, but it sounds like something else. The Sunline "era" that I specialize in used a wood panel, so I really can't help you with a fabric ceiling. Does it look like there's a small nail there? If there is, the nail and surrounding fabric could have been coated with something. How many spots are there, and are they only in one area or the whole ceiling?

Thanks for your reply. I am rather certain that it is not water damage as there are just a few random spots here & there. And the yellowish area tends to look shiny, versus a water bleed through stain if that makes sense. I will look again closely (even try to take a picture), but my thought was when the white textured ceiling that you see when you look up was adheard to the ceiling, there were maybe 6-7 random areas where pin holes happened. Thus I concluded either they were "touched up" with something that yellowed, or moreso, it's some bleeding of the adhesive used when applied. There are maybe 4-5 in the slideout ceiling area, one here & there by the bedroom or kitchen. Random as I noted.

Eric,

it sounds like what you are describing are the staples holding the panels to the roof trusses. They fill the holes with caulk, and the caulk is probably turning yellow.

On my 2004, I can see a few of the little off white spots you are referring to. They are about 1/16" wide and 3/16" long and match up to the staples they use. In my case they are the caulking over the staple heads.

If you want I will attempt to pop a pic if it will show up. DW thought it was a dirt spot and tried to clean it. Don't do that.... now you can really see it.

I'm pretty picky and can see these things, I know what they are and then they do not bother me so much. If they do, I'll touch them up.

So the newer ceilings used staples to hold up the fabric...

In the older trailers, one way nails were used to hold the solid wood panels to the rafters. They were painted white to begin with. Learn something new every day .

I'll pop a pic and post. You said fabric, well I do not recall fabric. There is something bonded onto a luan type wood panel. The staples or what looks like staples, are not evreywhere so it may not be the total holding up method.

You now have my curoisty up and I check it out and report back

Sorry, the newer TT's DO have that paper material on the wood. I was just thinking something had been changed with Eric's TT so he had a fabric ceiling. Some units (not Sunline) have used a carpeted ceiling to keep things quiet inside, so I thought Eric's could have been custom ordered with it, and he referred to it as fabric. Also, my parents' MH uses a vinyl type material on the ceiling.

Now that I think of it, I remember looking at a '05 SR at General RV in Brownstown when I got the ceiling panel for my 2363 and it had the same type of panel, just not the same pattern.

The panel is also glued to the rafters, but I think I remember seeing Sunline started to use staples to hold the panel up, instead of nails.

I think I just had a "brain fart" this morning and wasn't thinking things through totally . Thanks for your description about the caulking, it refreshed my memory. My memory gets corrupted sometimes when all I'm around is non-Sunline's!

Fellow Ceiling Investigators....

This is what I have in mine.

The panels are 4 foot wide and full width of the inside of the camper. At the seam they have a plastic joining molding so you do not see any fastening hardware.

The actual covering is some type of very thin vinyl type plastic something bonded to a piece of what looks like 1/8" thick Luann board.

And now to the infamous staples. I had a real hard time finding any. The panels must be glued and then add an occasional staple only when needed to take out a sag. I could only find 2 in the entire 3 ceiling panels I hunted really hard to even see. There may be a few more, but I could not find them.

But here is one. The camera zoomed in on it you can see it. They used a heavy (thick) type of caulk/paint to blend it. If you really look hard enough it is a slight off-white to the bright white ceiling.

Sunline Ceiling

Gentlemen,

I was away for a few days bringing our Sunline to our property for the summer, so am just now reading the postings. You guys are just too good! That is exactly how mine looks - so you've literally "hit the nail (staple) on the head!" Thank you very much as I am relieved. I was thinking if I had a water leak - that's it! I had a motorhome that cost me tons of money to fix the leak - never again.

I sincerely apprieciate you taking the time to address my question, provide the answer and bring me some peace of mind.

No problem. That is what this site is all about. Helping each other. It's that camping spirt.

We too all learn from each other. I never realized there was only a few of those staples up, there. Heck I had to really sqint to even find it , except the one DW try to wash off.... Don't do that. It's not a bug splat....

We learned now, don't try to wash it off....
