851 Sportster

First. there is no such thing as an 851 Sportster. An 883 Sportster measures 88.4 inches, a little over 7 feet so yes it should fit and might fit with tailgate up if you put it in diagonally. This is assuming you don't have an easy rider type stretched and raked out front fork.

I don't think he's talking about a Harley 883 Sportster, he's talking about a Sunline C-851 Sportster truck camper, which is roughly 8.5' long (13.5' with the cabover portion).

However, there wasn't a C-851 in 1980 either, the equivalent would have been the 8'6" SSDR.

Sorry, I can't help with the loading question though. I imagine even if it fit, the weight distribution might be a little funky in a short bed.
