2011 Annual Buttonwood Canoe & Kayak Trip

I contacted Buttonwood and confirmed that they will be holding places for Saturday at 2pm for the SOC members to take the trip. Those taking the trip are asked to meet at the office at 1pm for departure. As of now the trip is the 2 hour float/paddle down stream from Mifflintown to Buttonwood. If this isn't the desired trip let me know and we can change it.

Tom reccomended that members contact Buttonwood directly at their office to make reservations for the trip either before arrival at the CG or upon check-in.

They have a new policy for the canoes/kayaks for this year. They will be taking a deposit on the rental at the time the reservation is made. It doesn't have anything to do with our group...just a new policy to prevent no shows.

Lowell,

For a 2 hr trip and 2pm start time is probably good.
If people want a longer trip, I would suggest starting around 12noon.
Remember last year people were showing up late to the puck-luck dinner because of the length of the kayak trip.
I can't remember last year's start time or trip length.
Maybe Tweety will remember.

A 2nd suggestion, if there's a lot going and split interest in a long & short trip, we could split into 2 groups, a long trip heading out at noon and a short trip heading out a 2pm. This may also make it easier for Buttonwood transporting everyone.

We have no preference on length of trip.

Last year we were supposed to start at noon, but had a few logistical issues with the start location. One van thought we were doing the 2 hour trip and one thought the 3 hour trip, so until they figured out the problem, then took the van we were in upstream another 2 miles we weren't on the river until much later than planned. Plus it always takes about a half hour until we actually get away from Buttonwood, so that a noon start time really means 12:30. I'd bet we didn't get on the water until 1:30. Then we had the storm, and some people pulled over to wait it out.
Are they giving us a discount? It has always been $5 for the shuttle for those of us with our own kayaks, but I see that the 2 hour trip is now listed at $12 and the 3 hour trip at $17 if you have your own kayak. And $26 / $29 with a kayak rental.

Pam,

Does that mean they are now charging $12 or $17 Shuttle service for individuals with their own kayaks / canoes?

If that's ture, us with our own kayaks / canoes probably can do are own shuttle.

That's how I read it, I agree about shuttling ourselves if that's our price. But, honestly I'm not all that excited about the section of river we took last year. I thought the trip where you leave from Buttonwood and float south was alot prettier, although I realize that it's logistically easier for Buttonwood for us to end up back at the campground. But if alot of us were doing our own shuttle, then it might now be so bad for them to pick up the rest. Especially since it's a smaller group this year.

I went ahead and changed the trip for the 2 hour journey from Buttonwood down river to Muskrat Springs. Meeting at the office at between Noon and 12:30. Launch at Riverside at 1pm. This should have everyone back in plenty of time for dinner. Does this sound good to everyone?

When is the 2011 event? I just joined here and have been to the campground and the float trips on the bluegrass weekend in the past. It's a nice trip. They'll pick you up downstream at whatever state launch area you decide to go to. The good thing is that cell phones work on the river, so you have safety and convenience. They'll also take you upstream so you can float down to the state access area across the street from the barm at the campground.

It was in June, but it's an annual event. On the right of your screen you'll see the clicky list of Meet & Greets. The next big one is at Buttonwood June 8-10, 2012, but there are 2 smaller ones this fall in New York state if you're interested.

Thanks...

I see now that I missed it, but thanks for the post. I don't need to meet and greet for the sake of meeting people, but the river at Buttonwood is nice. It looks like he purchased the river campground across the street since I've been there.
