2009 Buttonwood M&G Country Roads Bike Ride Information & Sign Up

When? Sunday after breakfast, we'll be leaving at 10am

Who can go on the bike ride? Anybody can go, but children must be accompanied by a parent.

Where do we meet? Meet at Site # 83.

What type of bike? A road bike is best, but any decent bike will do.

Where will the bike ride go? The bike ride will start and end at the Buttonwood Campground.
The ride will follow some of the back country roads in the area going through the village of Port Royal and across a covered bridge.
See a map of the proposed route at the bottom of this post.

How Long will it be? The bike ride will be ~11 miles in length on mostly flat roads.
There will be an opportunity to turn around and head back to Buttonwood about ½ through the route (just after the Covered Bridge)

What should I bring? It’s probably a good idea to bring water, a snack, and your camera.
We strongly suggest you wear a bike helmet

If you are interested in doing the Bike Ride, please post a reply to this topic or PM me or Pam (aka Tweety).

Hi Hutch and Mr. Tweety

I'm up for this. Need to burn a few calories anyway. However will ask a few questions so I do not slow the group down.

You said ideally need road bike. But any bike will do. I may be reading into this too much... (I have a real hard time on those infamous test questions)

Mine is one of the intermediate bikes. Not a racing road bike but not an off road dirt bike. I have 21 gears so that is not a problem. I can keep up a 12 pushing 15mph bursts constant peddle speed but if your more then that I'm not going to be able to make it in my present day call it "conditioning". I have a speedometer to track my mileage so I know my limits. Have done over 50 milers with the Scouts, but have trained a month to be able to do that. We have guys here in town that go out and do 50 miles in less then 3 to 4 hours and all I say is WOW... not me.

Some how with our age group I'm not thinking your thinking this but will ask. A 10 to 12 mph peddling speed is fairly easy. Do you expect the trip to take say 1 ½ hours or so?

It will only be me. Cindy is content reading her book or yakking with a fellow camper passing by. I asked and she asks how long, I said 12 miles. The response was so quick I couldn’t finish the sentence... You go have fun, I’ll be here at the camper…

Hey John,

I would say yes - you are reading into this too much :D  :D

Seriously though, I only have a cheap mountain bike, which I haven’t ridden yet this year. Therefore, I’m anticipating I may be turning back at the half way point.
But if I don’t’ turn back, I’ll be doing the slow scenic tour. 8)

I don’t think you have anything to worry about. The trip will be a casual pace and I anticipate the group may end up splitting up into various groups cycling at their own pace.

I’ve added you to the list of participants.

See you in 5 days
Hutch

Cool Thanks!! I have been out for the last few nights trying to get my legs and cardio back up so I'm not a total couch potato.

Yes looking forward to this. And as of this note, I’ll see you in 4 ½ days…

John

We've both got mountain-biased bikes, and ride fairly often.

I however, geocache quite a bit and will make sure my GPS is on it's headset mount (so we don't get lost in PA)...

Gotta get back in time for the dinners!

Steve just returned from riding the bike route. It is 11 miles and almost flat with only 2 very small hills. He said it is a gem of a ride with a nice covered bridge.

I don't know if I can handle flat terrain- I'm used to climbing hills and weaving amongst the rocks and the trees.... Single and double track's my game- I SUPPOSE I'll make do ;)

Thanks for the pre-run Steve! I'm looking forward to the ride (esp. the covered bridge!)!
