2009 Adirondack Meet & Greet

John,
No not all at once, just in the different combinations. Actually I haven't had them on the F-250, they were on a Ranger S/C. I do have some pictures somewhere but not digital.

John and everyone else:

Rather than hijack the thread about the ADK M&G, I am going to start one over in Sunline Community about mounting canoes and kayaks on tow vehicles, etc. (I'm putting it in Community because none of the other forums seem appropriate.)

There are canoe rentals at Nick's Lake, but I don't know if they continue past Labor Day. A lot of peak season services fade away at that point.

Kathy might know better.

Tickner's Canoes has rentals staged at Nicks Lake - you would need to go into town and rent the unit - they would tell you which one, where it is, give you paddles and jackets and you are good to go - the rate for a canoe is $25.00 per day - rent for 2 days get 3rd day free..... Tickner's # is 315-369-6286

Thank you :D

Gee $25 a day, here is can be $15 an hour at some lakes....

I follow it from here.

Thanks

John

I intentionally held off firming up the menu for the Saturday night pot luck dinner so that everyone who went to the WNY M&G could concentrate on getting ready for that.

So now it's a week and a half to the ADK M&G and time to sort out the meals.

Mike will need a hand getting the shelter set up, and that has been an early Friday afternoon thing. I'll be there to give him a hand and we can always use more hands (or supervisors :D )

JohnB already proposed a group dinner for Friday evening. No pot luck or dish to pass, we'll all just prepare our own meals and gather on Site 54 at 5:45 PM.

Now, for Saturday's meal, same time to start - 5:45 PM.

Paul said that Sheri wanted to make her chicken and wine sauce dish. That got me to thinking. There's almost always way too much food at these things, so with seven couples, maybe we think about just bringing a dish to pass and skipping the bring your own meat.

Question for Paul: Was Sheri thinking of making enough to serve a small portion to each person, or perhaps a lesser amount?

If each of us brought a dish that would serve 8 to 10 people, we'd still have plenty to eat and still lots of leftovers. Thoughts on that?

Tentatively:

Gail & Steve: We'll take care of the pre and post meal appetizers and snacks. Gail has a wonderful mushroom based appetizer served up on slices of bruschetta. We'll also do a cheese board and chips and dip.

Paul & Sheri: Chicken and wine dish (or pork and wine.)

So, that leaves a dessert or two and a couple of other dishes for the main course still to be determined.

There are still a number of sites available if anyone wants to join us!

We’ve moved to site # 55 - so Site # 37 is open.
Since Harvey and Jan aren’t coming this year – I guess we’re invoking the squatter’s rights rule :D

For the Pot-Luck Dinner: I'll talk to the boss about Saturday's Pot-luck dinner (but Doug’s already has put in a request for either Mary’s potatoes or Pulled-Pork).
Question: Would we be able to run an extension cord from the bath house to the M&G site to run a crock-pot all day if Mary was to make her Pulled-Pork?
Not sure if that campground would allow that – anybody have any thoughts on that?

Also, a suggestion that came out of the WNY M&G was to have the Pot-Luck Dinner earlier – like around 4pm and then deserts later. This suggestion came out of primarily from the fact that there was so much food, everyone was too full to enjoy all the great deserts. So maybe it's something to think about for the ADK M&G.

We like the idea of the Friday dinner get together.

A couple of attendees from the WNY M&G said they’re thinking about joining us, if their schedules permit, so we may be adding 1 or 2 more Sunlines.

See everyone in a few weeks. We’re really looking forward to it.

Tom,

I just don't know about the crock pot question. Maybe someone else might have an idea?

I like the earlier dinner on Saturday. If the rest are in agreement, let's move it up to 4PM!

Looking to be a good weekend.

Steve

John and Cindy will be brining a Zucchini casserole for the Saturday nigh meal. As far as meats, being to enough of these things and always eating way too much…, we no longer bring a main meat etc. We bring our own drinks, eating utensils, napkins, plates and the Dutch Oven of food to share. And still go away over eating…. But it was Yummy!!!

The Barn raising (aka Mikes tent) count me in as a helper.

There was talk of a Sunday pancake breakfast, however only Steve and John commented to wanting one. Any other takers? Even to help eat them? We are OK one way or the other, just trying to plan gear as I have 5 lb of pancake mix and syrup that can be donated to the group if wanted.

Only reason for asking is coming this Saturday, 9/19 “The Camper 2” is heading north east. Anything I need to bring from home has to be packed by Thursday night this week before we leave. Inet access will be limited to a Blackberry if I even get reception after this Friday night (9/18 )… So I may be out of touch until we show up at Nicks lake after this Friday.

Looking forward to seeing and meeting everyone. :D The weather this past weekend in central Ohio was unbelievably perfect. :!: I’ll try to load up a bunch of it and bring but don’t know if it will make it….

I'm in favor of an earlier meal (4ish) and also in favor of Sunday pancake breakfast - we had one this past weekend and it pulled together very nicely! Very spur of the moment put we had everyone join in - it was the finishing touch to a wonderful weekend!

I've been asked to make Shepard's Pie (with beef not lamb) - so I'll do that for sure - any other suggestions from anyone?

I don't think we could run an extension from the bathroom - I would not trust it to be plugged in all day....someone might pull the plug........

I've made the pulled pork ahead of time and just warmed it when I needed it - would that work for Mary?

OK talked to the better half. We are OK with an eailer supper Saturday.

Only thing about the 4:00 is some of us are doing some semi serious cooking and it will have to start about 2 plus hours before meal time. Which 4:00 curbs most any afternoon activity past 2:00PM. Other then sit and yak which is a good past time too....

We are OK with 4:00, but 4:30 sit and dine would give a little more other time. Open to the group on what ever works. Were camp'in 8)

John,

Take your laptop if you have one. The NYS Thruway has free wifi at every service area in the main building.

Most public libraries have it, too. You may have to stop in when they're open to get the password. We do that in Tupper Lake.

Check this out! http://www.wififreespot.com/ny.html

Steve, yes I have one. Thank for the link, will have to check it out. However stopping on I90 and me checking SOC on the PC may not go over well with the better half... I'd have to stop and read to get my SOC fix in. And by then over and hours goes by...

Kathy,

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll pass it on to Mary and see what the boss wants to do.

I'll know for sure if we can attend in a day or two. Kathy was able to request the Friday off, just waiting on the approval to make it's way through that system. She isn't aware of them ever declining anyone before, but better safe than sorry.

If all goes well, Kathy mentioned making some Baked Ziti, probably with meatballs and/or sausage. I think she did something similar last year at Buttonwood, and it all disappeared, so I guess people liked it :)

Tom, any chance you know the current draw on that crock pot? Or maybe you have something like a kill-a-watt and can measure it easily? And about how many hours it needs to run for the pork?

We have to head out reasonably early on Sunday (7 hrs home), but Pancakes sound great. Never have to twist my arm to eat!

Steve mentioned propane lanterns. I always have one or two along for the ride. Not a problem to bring one to the group area.

Now, some questions for those familiar with the campground. If possible, I'd like to leave here right after Kathy gets out of work on Thursday. That would put me at Nick's Lake fairly late, probably around 11PM. Does anyone know if the campground would allow for a late arrival? Also, are the sites fairly easy to get into, or am I going to run the risk of being a real bother to people showing up at that hour? If allowed, and I can "sneak in" without causing a disturbance, that's great. If not, we will head up as early as possible on Friday.

Really looking forward to this one. The pictures from the last couple of years were terrific!

Frank, if you and Kathy can make it, that would be SUPER!

NYS Campgrounds have a late arrival procedure. Basically if you arrive after the booth at the gate has closed, you go find a site and park. In the morning, you go back to the booth and register. If you have a reservation, that site will be waiting for you.

Most of the sites are large and spacious. We'll all be waiting up for you anyway, and as far as I can tell, the most of the folks in C Loop will be SOC. We'll get you parked.

Have you made reservations yet? If not, Sites 37, 49, and 51 are still open. You can get your TT into any of them easily. 43 & 46 are also open, but they are 20' sites, really only tents and pop-ups on those two.

PTHutch has been on 37 the last several years, and his T-280SR filts with plenty of room to spare. 49 is about the same size, and 51 is, uh well, humongous....:)

Saturday dinner - gather 4'ish on Site 54 and sit down to eat at 4:30

In site number order:

38 - Gail & Steve - cheese board, chips & dip, mushroom dip on bruschetta
44 - Lorie & Doug - Dessert - Cake & some red wine
45 - Kathy & Leo - Shepard's Pie (beef)
47 - Sheri & Paul - Chicken (or pork) in wine sauce
50 - Cindy & John - Zuchinni casserole
52 - Judy & Mike - Dessert - something for the season & Judy's new coctail concoction!
55 - Mary & Tom - Mary's Potatoes
?? - Kathy & Frank - Baked Ziti (probably with meatballs or sausage)

Reminder, Friday's dinner is a group meal. Prepare whatever you like just for yourselves and bring it over to the group site. Since Friday is a travel day for some, let's plan this for 5:45 to eat. We can adjust that once we're up there.

Friday afternoon is setup on the group site (#54) - you're welcome to pitch in or just supervise.

Sunday morning's pancake breakfast is pretty much ad hoc. John's bringing his 5# of mix and syrup. We've got a really large griddle and will bring some goodies, too. Hutch has a big container of syrup. If anyone else wants to bring something over (a little bacon or sausage, hash browns, etc.) it won't go to waste.

I am not being a "wet blanket" here, but I thought you might want to see the 15 day forecast for Old Forge from Accuweather. The last few days of their 15 day forecast are not 100%. Yesterday's showed much better weather through our weekend. It may look quite different two or three days from now.

One point, however....
It's gonna be cool at night, and that likely won't change much as we get closer.
Snuggling weather!

Steve,

It'll probably be Mary's Potatoes.

I'll also be availabe to help M&G Site Setup.
We hope to be there early afternoon on Friday.

We also have a very large bottle of syrup for Sunday's pancake breakfast that we'll be bringing. It'll be enough for everyone.
