2005 Acura MDX

I love my 2005 MDX. So much that I only considered sunline within stated trailer capacity weight (3500 lbs for rv....5000 for boat.) And so much that, given rarity of the sunline in NC, I drove to PA (through frigging D.C. Traffic) to pick up my 1988 17' Saturn (which I believe is about 2300 pounds dry).

Now my beloved MDX needs $3000 work. (Value $6000 max.) Did pay $500 to install brake action/connection. But, car basically worthless to anyone but me.

I love it. Seems logical to dump it and find a car with better tow package. But...I love it.

Thoughts?

What type of work does it need? How many miles does it have?

If it's high mileage already, it would make sense to look for something new, but if it has life left in it, I could see why you'd want to fix it and keep it. Whether you put the work in it now or not really depends on how long you plan to keep it, and if you can justify investing that much in it to get some use out of it. That said, keep your receipts- if it is totaled in an accident after you put money in, you might be able to recoup a good amount of that cost from the insurance company if you can prove the work was done with receipts.

The brake controller can move over to a new vehicle no problem, so there would just be the cost to wire it in to something new.

Sentimental attachment is a hard one to overcome, and I'm more guilty than most on this.

Personally I think you are pushing the envelope with the Acura without extras 3500# is max and your loaded camper maybe pushing 3000# plus riders. Yeah the HP is there but a 300 HP WRX would not make a good tow vehicle either. I have a 17' T1700 that I tow with a Tacoma that has a factory tow package it's rated 6500# and there is no doubt it's behind me even with trailer brakes.

I have a friend in N.M. on a German car forum who buys, sells and ships collector cars all over the world. He really appreciates them but his motto is...

"All cars are toilet paper."

Meaning, use them for what they were designed for and dispose of them when you're done. Those words have put a lot into perspective for me over the last ten years.
